In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido have become synonymous with excellence. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards like Gaja, Vietti, and Marchesi di Barolo. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.
These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Wine Enthusiast (100)This compelling, fragrant red offers stunning aromas of woodland berry, new leather, pipe tobacco, pressed rose and the barest whiff of tar. The palate shows finesse and complexity, delivering juicy cranberry, red cherry, licorice and baking spice framed in tightly wound, elegant tannins. It's still youthfully austere, with vibrant acidity that promises decades of aging potential. |

Vinous (89)The 2006 Dolcetto d'Alba Priavino is a big, powerful wine endowed with masses of dark varietal fruit and an equally imposing tannic might. I remember seeing these vineyards just before the harvest in 2006. Voerzio pays just as much attention to his entry-level wines as he does his Barolos. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2006 Barolo Big ‘d Big, from the south-facing Mosconi vineyard in Monforte, impresses for its massive richness and the sheer purity of its fruit. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the overt, in-your-face Baroli that emerge from this warm site, but there is not denying the Big – and what a great name that is – for its sensual, exuberant personality. This will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2006 Barolo Vigna d’la Roul is one of the undeniable stars of this important vintage. A massive, tightly wound frame houses dark red cherries, minerals, iron and licorice in a powerful expression of Nebbiolo. The Vigna d’la Roul shows incredible thrust on the palate, with a long, intense finish that suggests it will offer very fine drinking for many, many years...once it awakens from what is likely to be a prolonged slumber in bottle. Clean, mineral notes add the final elements of vibrancy to the finish. The Vigna d’la Roul is the freshest and potentially longest-lived of the estate’s 2006 Baroli. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. |

Vinous (96)The 2006 San Leonardo is a masterpiece in the making. This is a dark, alluring and seductive vintage, richly displaying crushed black cherry and plum, offset by exotic sweet spices, tobacco and dried florals. It's textural depths tempt the imagination, giving way to ripe blackberries with a subtle citrus twang, complemented by stimulating minerality and juicy acids. An air of savory herbs develops over a coating of fine tannin. The long, and I mean long finale, balances youthful structure with persistent inner perfumes and primary fruit. The 2006 is like a well-muscled stallion. While still very early in its evolution, there’s no harm in checking on it now, but the best is yet to come. |

Decanter (99)To be honest I gave the Sassicaia 1985 a 100 points at the same tasting, but those notes have already been published, and it’s a vintage that has been celebrated plenty of times. Both bottles were from one of the standout tastings of the year – in Rome, a vertical of Sassicaia dating back over five decades. This 2006 has guts and glory, there is stuffing here. The exotic heat comes through like a pan-seared filet steak, nothing more than a flash fire that gives way to succulence. More exoticism with the dancing array of flavours, from plums, damson and spices to forest fruits and heather then the menthol kicks comes in. You just want to linger over this glass, pick apart the individual flavours and get to understand what it is saying. |

Wine Spectator (97)Displays loads of mint, eucalyptus, currant and meat on the nose. Full-bodied, with masses of fruit, yet reserved and structured. Mouthpuckering now from all the tannins, but this will give incredible pleasure in years to come. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2014. 6,250 cases made. -JS |

Vinous (96)Gianfranco Soldera’s 2006 Sangiovese is the last cask released during a tumultuous period for the estate that saw six vintages of wine in oak destroyed by a disgruntled former employee. Soldera first released his 2006 as a Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, but became so infuriated with his colleague producers in the aftermath of the loss of his wine that he left the appellation and decided to bottle all of his future wines as simply Sangiovese. In the glass, the 2006 Sangiovese is exquisitely perfumed and lifted, with subtle layers of flavor that develop over time, and superb balance. Today, the 2006 is pure finesse. |

Vinous (95+)The 2006 Tenuta di Trinoro is another profound wine from Andrea Franchetti. Purity, power and structure all come together as this stunning, youthful wine gradually opens in the glass. Jammy dark blueberries, menthol, spices and toasted oak are just some of the nuances to be found in this sweet, textured offering. Today it comes across as less intense than previous vintages. In 2006 the Tenuta is 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Franchetti describes the 2006 harvest, as Aserene@ particularly in the crucial last month of ripening which allow for a late harvest that took place between the 10th and 24th of October. |

Wine Enthusiast (97)Bravo! The Brunate cru has awarded Vietti with a stellar product: a wine that is unusually dark and plush with impressive intensity and crafted aromas of black fruit, spice, earth, licorice, balsam and gianduia chocolate-hazelnut spread. The soft, velvety texture is seductively delicious and the wine will age many long, glorious years. |
