The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes 75% from Chalumaux that was declassified in the late Seventies (there is a great story about why that happened, but I’ll leave it for another time). The palate is well balanced with a saline entry, good weight and a discreet touch of spice toward a finish of fine length. It comes across more backward when compared to the 2015 Meursault Rougeot or Narvaux that preceded this wine at the domaine tasting. The palate offers candied orange peel on the entry that gallivants about with mandarin and grapefruit. It is hot-wired with a killer line of acidity that imbues this Puligny with supreme energy. The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseigneres comes from a single hectare of vines planted in the 1950s. I often feel their Puligny is overlooked simply for the crime of not being "Meursault." The bouquet is very precise and focused, offering Golden Delicious apple, honeysuckle and light fennel scents, plus faint orange blossom aromas. The palate is powerful and intense with a fine bead of acidity, hints of praline infusing the slightly peachy fruit, and then coheres beautifully toward the persistent finish.
