The 2019 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru was reduced on the nose, making it difficult to read at the moment, though the palate is certainly well balanced, featuring crunchy black fruit laced with red currant and a generous sprinkling of cracked black pepper toward the finish. Intuition tells me this is a great Mazis-Chambertin; it will just need time.

Exotic, dark and turbo-charged, this wine is wound up with sweet black plums and blackberries, anise and forest floor. It's definitely a wine for those that like bolder, chunkier Pinots, whether you drink it soon or wait a few decades. Speaking of which, J r me feels strongly that it is best to wait ten years before trying this wine. For the less patient, I implore you to wait at least six or seven years! 2026-42

The Mazis is a highlight of the Drouhin portfolio this year, offering up an utterly classic nose of wild berries, cassis, gamebird and bonfire. On the palate the wine is powerful, full-bodied and concentrated, with a deep, brooding core of fruit, fine but ample tannins, and an abundance of savage, savoury complexity. This is one of the smaller cuvées in the Drouhin cellar, but it is absolutely worth ardent pursuit.

Good deep red. Wild nose features berry liqueur, game and smoky oak, with a firm stony underpinning. Then surprisingly silky on entry and broad and round in the middle, offering a felicitous combination of volume and power. This shuts back down on the back end, with the wine's minerality becoming more apparent.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Bright ruby. Reduced aromas of blackberry, game and licorice; strong suggestions of soil. Then wonderfully sweet and creamy in the mouth, with a slightly roasted ripeness of fruit complicated by mocha and flowers. Large-scaled, broad and mouthfilling but without any heaviness. This has fat and muscle, and finishes with huge tannins and compelling lingering sweetness. A superb early showing for this wine.

Good deep red with ruby highlights. Aromas of black raspberry, violet and licorice are purer and more precise than those of the young 2007. Then sweet and concentrated in the mouth, with a tangy freshness to the pristine dark berry and spice flavors. Youthfully closed in on itself, but already showing lovely fruit. This reminded me of a finer version of the 2007 Griottes. Finishes with building tannins. Became more expressive with air, but this really calls for a decade of cellaring.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Bright, deep ruby-red. Very ripe, wild aromas of kirsch, black raspberry and game. Round, sweet and voluminous on the palate, with complex flavors of black cherry, minerals, menthol, licorice and smoked meat. Serious tannins mask sound underlying acidity on the long finish.

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2014 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, from vines planted by Charles Roty at the beginning of the 20th century, has a very refined bouquet, very elegant, much more understated than recent vintages from Roty; it has hints of menthol and violets infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin, very silky in the mouth with a keen thread of acidity maintaining tension and poise. This is very seductive, very sophisticated and a great wine from Roty.

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is well defined on the nose, featuring graphite-infused black fruit laced with aromas of Christmas cake and loam. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and some vanilla-y new oak on the finish that will require several years to be fully subsumed. Very good length but patience required.

The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly animally nose at first, but it soon shakes off its feral element to reveal cassis and boysenberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, liquorice-infused black fruit with blood orange towards the confit finish. This should age well over the next 20 years.

Burghound (93-95)

(Don't Miss!) There is enough reduction to mask the fruit but not the sauvage elements Mazis is famous for. There is a bit more size, weight and power to the big-bodied flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a dusty, mouth coating and tightly wound finish that is austere but not rustic. Once again ample patience will be required as this is very clearly built-to-age.

Burghound (91-94)

Prominent spice nuances add breadth to the distinctly earthy and sauvage-inflected deeply pitched nose of red and dark currant, poached plum and leather. The succulent but muscular medium-bodied plus flavors possess plenty of minerality and even better depth and persistence on the attractively balanced if very firm finish.

The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru contains 10% whole bunches with 70% new oak. This is much more reduced than the Mazoyères so is difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good structure and symmetry, a keen thread of acidity and gently building red fruit leading to a complex and persistent finish. Great potential, this is a superb Mazis.

The palate is finely tuned and a little oaky at the moment, though the oak will be soaked up with time. This is well balanced, displaying a fine bead of acidity, impressive precision and a very persistent finish that is pure joy. An outstanding Mazis from Bernstein.
