The 2018 du Moulin Rouge fails to really lift off from the nose, coming across rather static compared to some of its peers. The palate is better, offering crisp black fruit, good acidity and a well-defined finish; in fact, it is so appealing that it makes the aromatics even more disappointing. I will seek to re-taste this once in bottle.

The 2019 du Retout is inky purple in colour. The bouquet is clean and pure with blackberry tinged with graphite and black truffle, all nicely delineated and growing in intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp tannins, compact and maybe leaner than some of its peers, though with satisfying persistence on the pencil lead infused finish. Fine.

This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the finest Senejac I have tasted. The team from Pontet Canet, who have done such a phenomenal job at that estate, were in charge of making this Senejac, and the result, not surprisingly, is a sensational wine that consumers need to buy by the case. Dense purple, with notes of creme de cassis, incense, licorice and forest floor, this wine is delicious and full-bodied, with sweet tannins, low acidity, copious fruit and exceptional concentration. Everything is in balance, and the wine is capable of lasting 10 or more years.

The 2014 Senejac has a withdrawn but well defined bouquet with more undergrowth aromas than many of its peers, unreservedly classic in style (and there is nothing wrong with that). The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe blackberry and boysenberry on the entry, a slight tinniness on the back palate with a very tightly wound finish. This clearly needs 4-5 years in bottle but it has the matière to repay those with patience. Tasted September 2016.

The 2001 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 26 and October 12. This vintage was highly rated, and I can understand why. It has a very open, expressive bouquet of blackberry, briar, sandalwood and a touch of wild fennel that keeps drawing you in. The youthful palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, and the long, tender raspberry- and Chinese-five-spice-tinged finish is a treat. This is certainly one of the most elegant Sociando-Mallets. Enjoy it over the next decade. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

Full, dense and sweet, with lively flavors of black raspberry and dark chocolate. Finishes with very fine tannins. The cabernet was harvested at even higher grape sugars than it was in 2003, notes Gautreau.
