The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village is the combination of three cuvées wih 35% whole bunch. There was a slight reduction on the nose that maybe exposes the whole bunch a little more, but there is so much freshness and vitality still present. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, just a faint almost dark chocolate like note in the background that will be assimilated by the time of bottling. Fine length. Pure perfection from this estate, the 1999 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is as seamless and sexy as wine gets, and I certainly can't imagine how it could be better. A healthy, mature ruby hue is followed by classic La Mouline sweet red and black fruits as well as notes of smoked game, flowery incense, spice, and some meaty nuances. It's full-bodied, has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, terrific concentration, resolved tannins, and a great, great finish. The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru feels a little muddled on the nose, just a touch of reduction that blows away, a little fiery compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, harmonious and smooth in texture. There is just a touch of volatility that I notice on the finish, although it is at a level that can be countenanced and lends a needed kick. Not a faultless Clos de Vougeot, but it has charm. Composed of 56% Merlot, 37.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Haut-Brion is deep garnet in color. The nose beings with simple licorice notes before slowly unfurling to deliver growing scents of creme de cassis, plum preserves, dark chocolate, and lilacs, followed by suggestions of crushed rocks, tar, black truffles and cardamom. The full-bodied palate is a tightly coiled spring, taut with black fruit preserves and earthy layers and framed by very firm, grainy tannins, delivering a burst of freshness to carry the long, long, long finish. A note of musky reduction to the aromas of white peach and quinine. Saline, energetic wine with terrific thrust and salty length. A superb mineral expression. This lot may yet go into the Lamy's classic cuvée of Derrière Chez Edouard. Lot #2, from a 2001 planting at a extreme density of 30,000 vines per hectare, which Lamy harvested first in 2016: Pale lemon-yellow. Metallic minerality and a note of minty freshness on the nose. Boasts superb sappy energy and intensity to its flavors of lemon zest, lime and stone, with captivating sweetness adding to its appeal. This definitely represents a new beginning for the Clos des Lambrays, beginning with a dizzying array of aromas that range from high-toned red fruits to ripe, plummy black fruit, all touched with spice, and a suggestion of wild herbs and fresh flowers. After blending there was an average of 80% whole cluster fermentation. This is a great vintage from Domaine Leflaive, which owns 4.92 acres in Chevalier, including a significant portion of vines dating to the 1950s. This 2005 is marked by the concentration of a smaller-than-average harvest (cool weather during flowering caused poor or uneven fruit set). The season was dry, the grapes harvested on the 20th and 21st of September, fruit days on the biodynamic calendar, following several days of north winds and sunshine that peaked the fruit ripeness. The beneficent conditions and the care with which estate manager Pierre Morey and Anne-Claude Leflaive farm their vines resulted in this brilliant Chevalier. It shows an aristocratic finesse from the moment the bottle is opened. The wine's power and dynamic intensity make it hard to resist, as if it went beyond perfect balance and form to sustain the energy of the fruit in the glass. The taste is little more than a caress that lasts for minutes, bringing idealized images of Burgundy to mind: the sun on a hillside of yellow herbs growing between the vines, the roots working their way through minerals in the soil, a cool limestone cellar where wine rests in oak. The elegance that comes from Chevalier's high point on the hill separates it from Domaine Leflaive's more broad-shouldered Bâtard, the distinction amplified in this vintage. The 1989 Montrose, from a very warm, dry year, is made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-brick in color (holding its color amazingly!) it sky-rockets from the glass with flamboyant notes of black cherry compote, blueberry pie, and blackcurrant jelly, followed by notes of star anise, peonies, crushed rocks, and tar, plus exotic hints of cardamom and cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich, opulent, and well structured, delivering firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the generous, wonderfully pure fruit, finishing long and earthy. Very pure but subtle and shy on the nose, exuding scents of blackberry, dark cherry, violet and dark chocolate accented by orange zest. Offers an exhilarating balance of almost chocolatey sweetness and penetrating acidity. Finishes very long and primary, even a bit inky, with suave tannins and firm acidity.
