The 2007 Colore harkens back to a period that produced wildly uneven wines here. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, cloves and licorice open up on the pliant, mid-palate, but that's pretty much it. The finish is short, compact and attenuated. Overall, the 2007 Colore is a far cry from Bibi Graet'z best wines. Colore is a Sangiovese/Canaiolo/Colorino blend. It will be interesting to see where the 2007 Poggio al Vento goes over the coming decades. Today, it is all about texture. I tasted the 2007 Flaccianello a number of times from barrel and tank before it was bottled. The 2007 is a bold, extroverted Flaccianello that sweeps across the palate with sensual layers of candied cherries, violets, spices and minerals. Dark, mentholated notes develop in the glass, adding further dimensions of inner sweetness, weight and complexity to this Tuscan thoroughbred. While so many 2007s are forward and open, Flaccianello remains muscular, taut and in need of significant cellaring. Still, the round, enveloping finish augurs extremely well for the future. In fact, this is one of the most refined vintages of the Castello I can remember tasting. The ripe, open personality of the year is present, but there is more than enough structure to provide balance. Floral notes reappear on the vibrant, beautifully articulated finish. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow up to the epic 2006. Even better it should drink well quite a bit earlier than that wine. Sadly, there are fewer than 1,000 cases to go around. This isn’t a huge, structured vintage of Percarlo, but in exchange the wine should drink well earlier than some of the more powerful surrounding vintages, namely 2006 and 2008. Broad, ripe and lush but quite dry, offering outstanding depth to the tarry red fruit and mocha flavors but tightening up considerably on the back end.
