Not surprisingly, the 2013 appears headed into a period of dormancy. I wouldn't touch a bottle anytime soon.

The excellent 2013 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj (with fruit from the clay soils of Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba) is a powerful, generous and dramatic wine that promises a very long drinking future ahead. The fruit is dark, rich and exuberant. There is a touch of black cherry sweetness that is very specific to this growing site and the heavier soils that characterize it. At this young stage, the wine is slightly austere and rigid, especially in terms of mouthfeel. This is completely expected, especially in a cool vintage such as 2013. The wine needs time to unfold and blossom like a rose.

This wine tells a story from nose to finish, like a flashing film reel. Fewer than 5,000 bottles were made. The 2013 Barolo Conteisa is now officially a DOCG wine following years as a Langhe Nebbiolo or IGT wine. The first vintage was 1996 and fruit is sourced from the Cerequio cru in La Morra. This is a classic and coherent expression that is characterized by crunchy fruit flavors and sweet tannins. Fruit came into the winery at very low temperatures and saw slow fermentations. Generally speaking, the 2013 vintage is characterized by slow ripening and a long growing season (unlike 2012 that saw more concentrated heat). This is a balanced and homogenous wine with a softly caressing nature. It offers aromas of citrus, summer fruit and even a touch of watermelon pulp. This wine is usually considered the more immediate of Gaja's two new Barolo wines, yet this vintage surely needs extra time to evolve.

Beautifully sculpted and precise, the 2013 offers up a compelling interplay of dark red cherry, mint, lavender and licorice. A subtle accent of French oak adds nuance without detracting from the wine's translucent personality and overall energy. At the same time, it is hard for the mind not to wander a bit and imagine what the wine might have tasted like had it been made more along the lines of the Costa Russi, especially given this site's inherent finesse. But back to the present. The 2013 Sorì Tildìn is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Gaja.

The 2013 Barolo Ravera is tightly wound and austere, with tons of its energy in reserve. Lavender, violet, plum, spice and menthol are beautifully delineated throughout. In some vintages Ravera is explosive, but the 2013 is very much closed in on itself. Attractive scents of rose petal, mint, sweet red berries and chalk infuse the taut, salivating finish. My instincts say this is going to be a very special wine one day.
