If you can't choose between those wines, you always have this excellent fallback. The classic 2016 Barolo offers dark intensity with great aromatic detailing. Fruit and some floral notes are followed by ferrous notes and a good amount of powdered licorice. The aromas are delicate and fragile; however, the wine deftly hides its power within the soft folds of its slender, mid-weight mouthfeel. This is a perfect go-to Barolo when you can't choose from all the excellent options in this benchmark 2016 vintage. This wine, like the others, hit the market in May 2020.

The mouthfeel is rounder and fuller, fleshed out considerably in all the nooks and crannies, with the bigger impact of sheer Nebbiolo personality. This is your proverbial red-meat Barolo. This site is one of the last to ripen, awarding the grapes ample time to reach maturity at a slow and careful pace.

Ceretto's 2016 Barbaresco Asili is another stunningly beautiful wine from Ceretto. Here, too, the wine's energy and tension are simply dazzling. Bright red cherry fruit and floral overtones abound in this taut, crystalline Barbaresco. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, but it is a jewel of a wine. Deceptively in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 packs a serious punch and really sizzles with vibrancy.

The 2016 Barolo Mosconi is a gorgeous wine made all the more remarkable given that Mosconi can't really be said to be a top-level site. Dark and imposing, the 2016 captures all the breadth and tannic clout that are such signatures of this site. This is an especially brooding, virile Barolo, but Chiara and Giorgio Boschis clearly brought out all the best the vineyard had to give.

Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d'Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. It ages in barrique for eight months, followed by another year in larger oak casks. Some 20,000 bottles were released.

Deceptive in its mid-weight, structure, the 2016 has a lot to offer.

The 2016 Barolo Pajana is ample, powerful and resonant, with terrific body and a real sense of expansiveness that builds with time in the glass. Sweet spice, citrus and floral overtones add brightness to this attractive, mid-weight Barolo. The 2016 is deep and yet also tannic. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years.

The Elio Altare 2016 Barolo Unoperuno is a special wine with a high price tag that is explained by the manual labor required for its creation. "Uno per uno" means "one at a time" in Italian, and the fruit, the actual individual berries, are selected by hand during a super precise sorting operation. It represents a blend of Arborina in La Morra, Cannubi in Barolo, Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto, Sarmassa in Barolo and Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba. There is smoke and spice acquired during two years of oak aging. A precious few 1,200 bottles were produced, berry by berry.
