Approaching perfection, this wine is inky, bluish/purple-colored to the rim, offering up notes of incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. Rousseau's 2000 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is quite successful in this vintage, and it's certainly still full of life, opening in the glass with a pretty bouquet of red cherry, strawberry, subtle mint, mustard seed and potpourri. On the palate, the wine is supple, polished and velvety, with decent concentration and depth, and suggestions of baked fruit on the palate. The 2000 Brut La Grande Année is a ripe, open wine bursting with generous, expansive fruit. Smoke, minerals, pastry crust and flowers add complexity to the radiant fruit. The Grande Année reveals gorgeous depth and a multi-dimensional, kaleidoscopic personality that screams of pure breed. The 2000 will be a fascinating vintage to follow. I am not sure is has the freshness to be an extremely long-lived wine, but it does a fabulous job in capturing the Bollinger house style. It has been a few years since I last tasted the 2000. In that time, the wine appears to have barely budged at all, which will come as welcome news to readers who own it. The 2000 Riserva doesn’t quite reach the heights of the truly epic Giacosa wines of the era, but it comes close, especially on this night. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity.
