Captivatingly fresh, primary aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers are accented by a sappy note of blood orange; reminded me a bit of a topnotch Burgundy from Vosne or Chambolle. Sweet and thick but with lovely acidity giving the wine a strong impression of inner-mouth tension. A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. As always, the Ca'Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. Today some of the ferrous notes typical of this site are less obvious, as the fruit is incredibly rich and intense. Over time, though, it is the wine's pure energy that stands out most, another typical Garblèt Sue’ characteristic. A real heat-turner, the 2013 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is powerful and surprisingly dense and rich. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of succulent red-fleshed fruit. This is a surprisingly ample, richly textured Rocche with huge density, creaminess and body, all qualities that are not often seen in Barolos from this site. There is a hint of Rocche sensuality in the glass, but the 2013 is holding quite a bit back in reserve. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, mint, wild flowers and blood orange give the wine its distinctive signatures. Today, the 2013 impresses for its mid-palate depth, aromatic intensity and racy personality.
