Wine Advocate (97)Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Damoy's 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was one of the highlights of the entire tasting. It has a showstopper of a nose with brilliantly defined black plum, cranberry, wild strawberry, sous bois and minerals. You just have to stop and admire the clarity of the aromatics here. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine bead of acidity interwoven through the black cherry, cranberry and raspberry fruit. There is the structure and masculinity of a Clos de Bèze, and yet it is certainly not unapproachable at this premature stage. Fabulous. Must be a bit of a snob I suppose. A solid central core of purple, an imperial robe. Just a soupçon of oak on the nose but obviously the fruit is far more evident. There is indeed an immense weight of dark fruit on the nose, with the whole bunch pepper and spice woven throughout. Excellent weight and density. Rich red roses, along with a sensual dark raspberry, sensuality and structure beautifully interwoven. Drink from 2032-2045+. |

Then wonderfully sappy and vinous in the mouth, with a powerful crushed stone element giving punch to the creamy mid-palate. This is in the style of Potel's Lavaux Saint-Jaques, offering outstanding precision and class and a powerful impression of energy. Can't quite match the Chambertin for sheer grip but this wine is like a wake-up call to the taste buds. (The Griottes-Chambertin, which finished its malo later, was quite youthfully clenched and oaky, and impossible to assess with confidence.) |
