A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially.

Cask sample. Mid-dark ruby. Sweet, red fruits (red cherry, laced with redcurrants and red-fruit coulis) this is glamorous, oozing refined, elegant luxury. There is fine, high-strung acidity which belies its firm, almost four-square structure. Very long, very fine, very nascent

Vinous (96-98)

The 2010 Chambertin is another drop-dead, gorgeous wine. Today it is less expressive than the Mazis, especially in its aromatics, although the fruit shows wonderful roundness and depth. Waves of fruit continue to build effortlessly as the wine opens up in the glass. Clean, saline notes frame the long, persistent finish. The Chambertin isn't one of the more immediate wines here in 2010. Instead it will require considerable patience. The Chambertin was made with 100% whole bunches and aged in 100% new barrels.

The Bernard Dugat-Py Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes 2006 is a quintessential fine wine for the discerning connoisseur. Esteemed winemaker Bernard Dugat-Py hails from Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, respected globally for its exquisite terroir. The 2006 vintage is undoubtedly a representation of Dugat-Py's expertise, produced from incredibly old vines and displaying the quintessential charm of Grand Cru pedigree.

Displaying an incredible depth of flavour, the Bernard Dugat-Py Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes 2006 reveals layer upon decadent layer of ripe fruit, perfectly poised with an undercurrent of taut minerality, and a long, complex finish. The wine is matured in new oak, lending a nuance of luxury without overpowering the noble fruit.

This wine underscores the commitment of its maker to producing wines that are the epitome of Burgundian elegance, complexity and longevity.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)

Bright, deep red. Enticing, nuanced aromas of black raspberry, mocha, game, iron and animal fur. Suave and silky, with nicely integrated acidity framing the sappy red fruit and torrefaction flavors. This shows lovely inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and lingering red fruits. But does it have the classic thrust of great Chambertin?

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-97)

Medium deep purple. The nose is sombre, deep and backward. This has a huge wealth of fruit on the palate, especially at the front, very primary fruit. It does extend through very nicely but the second half of the palate is yet to fill out, as I think it will.

Dark red. Three-dimensional aromas of dark fruits, minerals, roast coffee and musky underbrush. An extremely urgent grand cru with incredible texture and energy. Dense and almost painfully intense but utterly light on its feet for a wine of such sheer magnitude. Deeply spicy, complex and complete. Finishes with huge, broad tannins and great building persistence. A knockout, and a strong candidate for wine of the vintage.

The 2009 Chambertin is one of the wines of the vintage. It is also the least obvious of the 2009 grand crus. This isn’t an immediate wine, rather it is a Burgundy that challenges all of the senses with sublime understated personality. Time spent with the wine is immensely rewarding, as the Chambertin is constantly changing in the glass, challenging the taster to keep up with its sheer pedigree. This is all nuance and class. I also tasted the 2010 from barrel, and it was beyond profound. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

Seamless and creamy, the 1949 Chambertin is another wine that is full of site character. Once again, the impression is of a wine of extraordinary balance and eternal class, where all of the elements are so artfully woven together that nothing in particular stands out. For its age, the 1949 retains remarkable freshness.

Wine Advocate (92-93)

Produced from a parcel located on the extreme northern end of its vineyard, just below Domaine Armand Rousseau's, Pierre Damoy's 1999 Chambertin was harvested at 32 hectoliters per hectare. It is medium to dark ruby-colored and reveals licorice, sweet cherry, blackberry, toasted oak, and spice flavors. This full-bodied wine has huge concentration to its rich and intense character. It is highly structured and youthfully austere, yet loaded with powerful black fruits and a strong oak influence. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2013+.

Modestly saturated red with an amber edge. Wild, expressive scents of plum, leather and minerals are distinctly more evolved than those of the 1990 Vieilles Vignes bottling. Salty, suave wine with a seamless texture and a repeating leathery note to its flavors of plum, minerals and subtle dried flowers. Quite complex and perfumed in an old-fashioned way, conveying captivating vinosity. Finishes firm and long, with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely rising lift. This will still go on for a while. (13.7% alcohol with chaptalization; the last vintage made by Jean Trapet, the father of Jean-Louis; included a lot of small, late-picked millerandé grapes)

Quite fleshy, broad and rich, with its dark fruit and mineral flavors conveying a distinctly spicy quality. This doesn't quite display the high notes of the 2008 but then it's a sunnier style of wine. Compellingly full in the mouth and evolving very slowly. Finishes sappy and very long, with serious youthful tannins that avoid dryness but could still use more time to round out. (13.25% alcohol; 38.5 h/h; 3.48 pH, 3.6 g/l acidity; vinified with 60% whole clusters, which Trapet described as a little high for him)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru from J L Trapet showed some stem addition on the nose, although there is sufficient fruit to support and absorb it over time. Indeed, with aeration it gains more harmony and the whole bunch influence seems to recede. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a superb thread of acidity, grippy in the mouth with a tightly wound, quite firm and masculine finish and a hint of tobacco on the aftertaste. This is a Chambertin surfeit with personality and nobility. Tasted September 2017.

Decanter (99)

Velvety and dense, showing enchanting approachability even at this early stage. There are forward, sweet aromas of red and black plum, cassis, and bramble on the nose, with a distinct floral edge and a hint of liquorice. There is enough extract to suggest that, despite its approachability, this will age for decades to come. Made with grapes from two well-placed parcels in the centre of Chambertin, running from the bottom nearly to the top of the slope.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on 7 September and a small plot around five days later. It has a beautiful, quite ethereal bouquet with a complex mélange of red and black fruit, the 80-90% whole bunch completely assimilated with wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, harmonious and smooth, immense depth and elegance as it fans out towards the finish with perfect sapidity. Sublime.
