Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

Subtly leesy aromas of pineapple, honeysuckle and spice; comes across as more floral than mineral today. Very dense but almost magically vibrant and delineated, with the fresh pineapple flavor carrying through on the palate. Finishes with superb persistence. Wears its 14+% alcohol gracefully. Incidentally, Masclet considers the '98 Haut-Brion Blanc the second best release of the '90s, following the other-worldly '94.

(also sur colle) Very good deep ruby. Blackcurrant, cedar and Havana tobacco on the nose. Lush but vibrant, with superb depth of flavor and layered texture for the vintage. Dense but tender. Ripely oaky finish features even, tongue-dusting tannins.
Emitting a sublime allure, the Latour a Pomerol 1981 is a magnificently matured Merlot offering from the Bordeaux region of France. Cultivated by the venerable Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix vineyard, this venerated vintage exhibits an opulent blend of black fruit and truffle, underpinned by tertiary notes of cigar box and forest floor. Ageing in French oak barrels, extended maceration, and meticulous selection have lent this wine an inimitable structure and a peerless depth of flavour. The vineyards' clay and gravel soils endow the Latour a Pomerol 1981 with an exceptional minerality and refined tannins. Elegantly faded, this expressive, earthy pour breathes expansive charm, epitomising the splendour of its era and the sophistication of Pomerol's unique terroir. This is the epitome of a fine collector's wine that masterfully evokes the charm of its vintage. Undeniably, a bottle of Latour a Pomerol 1981 is testament to the immortal allure of Pomerol's vineyards.

Fresh but reticent black cherry-dominated nose. More closed than the '96 following the bottling, and a bit disjointed today. Seems drier than the '96, but has plenty of underlying sweetness, solid structure, and nicely buffered tannins.

Tasted at the château, the 1983 Montrose, picked between 27 September and 13 October, was quite deep at the core but showing some bricking on the rim. The nose feels fatigued and leathery, an ephemeral bouquet that could blow away in the lightest wind. The palate is light-bodied, angular and hollow, a large hole where the fruit ought to be and then it tapers to a severe, raw and slightly vegetal finish. Robert Parker lambasted the 1983, which given the reputation of the property and the fact that it was not a terrible growing season like the following year, should have been much much better. This is outshone by the 1984—enough said. Tasted September 2016.

Vinous (91+)
Deep ruby. Very ripe and warm on the nose, but not pruney or over the top. A big, round wine with lush dark berry and cherry compote flavors and a serious, chewy texture. A bit youthfully inexpressive today but the power and concentration of the material are obvious. Notes of espresso and candied licorice emerged with aeration. Frederic Jaboulet noted that production was down from a normal 20,000 cases to 7,000.
