    Heresztyn-Mazzini

    About Heresztyn-Mazzini

The quiet and unassuming neighbour of Pierre Duroché, Heresztyn-Mazzini has (finally) caught the attention of Neal Martin, who is not shy about directing the spotlight to this Domaine. Today we are thrilled to feature the 2019 range of this hidden gem that, in Neal Martin’s opinion, will make a fine substitute for Armand Rousseau!

“Their premier cru Les Champonnets will make a perfectly fine substitute if your allocation of Rousseau has been cut since there are stylistic similarities, and whilst I don't think their Morey-Saint-Denis quite hit the spot, their Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is top class. For sure, their name does not quite trip off the tongue like Rousseau or Dugat, but the contents can be described in a two-syllable word...yummy.” – Neal Martin (Vinous)

The story of Heresztyn-Mazzini began with Jean Heresztyn, a Polish migrant who left Poland in the 1930s due to the ailing economy. He eventually found work at Domaine Trapet and by 1959, had saved enough to start his own Domaine. For many years, the domaine’s wines remained mediocre until Florence Heresztyn and her husband, Simon Mazzini, took over the reins beginning with the 2012 vintage. Under her charge, wines made a remarkable turn for the better and are now highly regarded, mentioned in the same breath as top names like Armand Rousseau, Dugat-Py and Pierre Duroché.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

50% whole bunch vinification, 25% new wood. First to be picked. Pretty ruby-purple colour. The nose here has the elegance and charm of Chambolle with the lifted fresher qualities of the whole bunches. Fresh raspberry and alpine strawberry, avoids the herbaceous note to be found in Clos Village, and has good acidity, refined tannins and fine length. Well made and enticing. Tasted: December 2021

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)

50% whole bunch vinification, 25% new wood. Medium deep crimson, a lighter bouquet than the Bourgogne, but pretty. Still quite ripe with a touch of liquorice alongside crushed strawberry. The stems give a little herbaceous twist though otherwise the fruit is prettily perfumed. Medium length, few tannins and just the right acidity. Discreet but persistent. Use Fontainebleau wood here. Tasted: December 2021

The 2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from two vineyards in Gevrey and is completely de-stemmed. It has a light and slightly earthy nose that just needs a little more clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, but there is a touch of bitterness on the finish at the moment.

The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak with 60% whole bunches from 45-year old vines that are Cordon pruned, although they are introducing some Guyot simple. It has a precocious bouquet with macerated dark cherries, blackcurrant and spicebox. The palate is dense and rather introverted. Perhaps here I would have liked just a little more delineation for it seems rather blocky and heavy on the finish. Afford this 5 to 7 years in bottle - hopefully it will lighten up.

The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is arresting on the nose, showing a touch of brief reduction before black and red fruit soar from the glass. There seems to be some stem addition here lending an attractive pepperiness, but it is more opaque and more vivid than the 2018 Clos de Tart. The palate is medium-bodied with distinctive whole bunch acting as the guiding hand. Maybe too much? Yet it is very fresh and vibrant with a wonderful arching structure on the finish. This is being broached years too early and it jus needs a long time to assimilate the stems. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2019 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is matured with 50% new oak and 100% whole bunch, the pruning having changed from cordon to Guyot simple in 2018. It has a lovely bouquet of orange-peel- and marmalade-infused red berry fruit, fine mineralité and wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite savory in style, leading to a slightly austere finish that should gain a little more flesh with bottle age. This is a classy offering that will need 4–5 years to show its full potential.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

100% whole bunch vinification, 50% new wood. Bright crimson purple. The nose takes some teasing out, but is not initially among the most flamboyant. Whole bunch pepper is apparent and a weight of dark fruit. Huge volume on the palate, a brooding dark raspberry with more lifted red cherries, the whole bunches quite evident but also well integrated, a refreshing mineral acidity and the sumptuous hedonistic style which is typical of Clos St-Denis dominating the aftertaste. Certainly very long indeed. Would like to see this in ten years time. Tasted: December 2021

Matured with 60% whole bunches and 50% new oak, the 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a crisp nose with touches of menthol and blood orange surfacing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, a dash of white pepper, cohesive with another quite elegant, brown spice and cracked black pepper finish. Very fine.

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes includes 55% whole bunch fruit and it was matured in 30% new French oak. It offers bright redcurrant and cranberry scents on the nose that is well defined and offers plenty of freshness and vitality. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, structured in style with more crunchy black fruit here than the aromatics, sous-bois and white pepper towards the finish. This is premier cru in quality—excellent.

    Vinous (88-90)

A blend of different vineyards of 70-year-old vines, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has less whole bunches compared to previous vintages (40%). It has a slightly conservative nose, backward at first, unfolding with tertiary/floral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, just a splash of balsamic behind the red berry fruit. Just missing a little length but fresh from start to finish. Fine.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru comes from around 55-60 years old vines, matures in 30% new oak and 70% whole bunches. This has a ripe and refined bouquet with hints of blue fruit developing in the glass, very floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. This feels linear and precise, gradually building towards a very minerally and tensile finish. Great persistency here, a superb Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets 1er Cru is showing the stem addition on the nose at the moment, though that will all integrated with time. There is a lovely, subtle sea spray/oyster shell scent here that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with fine definition, taut and fresh, very harmonious with a gentle grip on the silky finish. This is another classically-styled Gevrey-Chambertin that should age with style.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru is matured with 60% whole bunches. The stems exert quite an influence on the nose, black pepper notes rather obscuring the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, fine tannins, and quite mineral driven. Here, the stems show much better integration. I suspect that the aromatics will come together with bottle age, so don't be afraid to cellar this.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes is more opulent and richer on the nose compared directly with the Les Jouises, though it does not convey the same delineation or mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with vivid red berry fruit, white pepper and an almost citric note towards the finish. Enjoyable as this is, I am more smitten by the elegance of the Les Jouises this year.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru matures in 30% new oak and with 50% whole bunches (the domaine feels that more than this percentage is excessive.) The bouquet is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, plenty of red berry fruit mixed with hints of pain d’épices and touches of cassis. This is quite open on the finish but one feels it deserves two or three years before reaching for the corkscrew. Fine.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch and is matured in 30% new oak (Billon and Chassin cooperages). The very cohesive bouquet features brambly red berry fruit, briar, black tea and undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery entry, fine acidity and a Morey-like structure toward the finish. While not amazingly long, it is very nicely focused and exudes breeding.

(from a .35 ha parcel). An overtly floral and quite spicy array of black cherry, earth and warm earth leads to seductive, delicious and caressing medium-bodied flavors that possess ample punch that carries over to the bitter pit fruit and austere finish. This is unusually powerful for La Perri re and should age accordingly. (90-93)/2032+

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots was the last to be picked as they wanted to wait for the weather to achieve ripeness (around September 24). The nose is very attractive, with the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and vigor, subtle woodland aromas, perhaps even a hint of mushroom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, masculine and upright with decent structure, "correct" on the finish but precise and detailed. This shows what this vineyard can do in the right hands.

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. It has a complex bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and blood orange, very focused with deftly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little meatiness/dried blood developing underneath the carapace of black fruit, white pepper and Moroccan spice towards the finish. I love the tension here, not powerful but it just has the energy you would not anticipate from such a warm season.
