About Domaine Ponsot
Founded by a soldier returning home from the Franco-Prussian War in 1872, radical thinking and revolutionary ideas seem to be something of a family trait. The current eccentric Ponsot at the helm of this fabulous estate is Laurent, who is making wildly unique yet utterly Burgundian wines from some of the finest Grands Crus in the entire region.
The Winemaking
Although classified as neither biodynamic nor organic, he uses no insecticide or pesticide on his vines that are an average of 50 years old. To ensure quality, the label is unique for having a white spot that turns grey if the bottle has been subjected to extreme temperatures.
Laurent Ponsot studies the moon and the stars (he is not an astronomer), and their effect on the rhythm of life in the vineyards. A holistic approach that sees him lean heavily towards low intervention winemaking techniques to respect this natural harmony. The faintest touch of sulfur is afforded to the grapes upon picking if absolutely necessary, and there is no sorting table in his winery. Once pressed, the liquid is essentially allowed to ferment whenever it wishes for as long as it wishes. Once the wines have achieved the requisite state of their own accord, they may or may not be racked in the following spring or summer depending on the cycle of the moon.

Burghound (92)As it was when first reviewed, this is exceptionally ripe with dense aromas of spice, cassis, plum and earth. There is excellent phenolic maturity to the equally ripe and very concentrated, even opulent flavors that hint at an underlying minerality on the long but slightly flat finish that does manage to be attractively persistent. This is a bit too ripe for my taste as it lacks a bit of energy yet if bold and super-rich Gevrey is your preference, you will perhaps like this more than I do. With that said, it is a perfectly good wine, just not a great one. |

Burghound (86-89)A notably ripe yet attractively fresh nose speaks of both red and dark berries along with soft earth nuances. There is fine volume to the relatively full-bodied flavors that possess a lovely mid-plate texture before concluding in a mildly rustic and warm finish. Still, this is really quite good and worth considering as a quality option for an all-around house red. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Dark crimson with a hint of blue. The sort of wine that makes you purr with contentment. So much interesting fruit in here but a savoury side to it too. Still very young but with boundless energy, bitter plum sweetness on the finish. Very fine. |

Burghound (97)A brooding and almost grumpy nose only grudgingly gives up its aromas of poached plum, warm earth, smoked game and once again, plenty of spice nuances. The velvety and opulent big-bodied flavors brim with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a seductive mid-palate mouth but also serves to buffer the remarkably firm tannic spine shaping the powerful and hugely long finish where the only nit is a suggestion of warmth. This is a fantastic but seriously imposing wine with the structure to match so this is one to buy and forget you own it. In a word, brilliant. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, touches of mulberry and briary. It is a relatively conservative Griotte compared to others tasted from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. A little fuller than the Charmes-Chambertin '13 with fine backbone, this feels chewier, but with plenty of substance on the finish. This is a gutsy Griotte, but it will mellow by the time it is bottled. |

Wine Advocate (94)That site and cépage were well-adapted to this vintage is proven by the 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Blanc, a striking wine evocative of citrus zest, crisp Anjou pear, freshly baked bread and almond paste. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with a deep core of fruit and chalky structuring extract, it concludes with a long, saline finish. |

Wine Advocate (91-93+)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes opens in the glass with notes of plums, cherries, raw cocoa, cinnamon and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and fleshy, it's layered and elegantly gourmand, with lively acids and a precise, mineral finish. As usual, this hails entirely from the Clos de Monts Luisants, but the domaine opts not to mention the lieu-dit on the label to avoid confusion with their emblematic white wine from the same vineyard. |
