Charles Smith
Charles Smith is an American who managed rock bands in Europe, including The Ravenettes. He discovered his passion for wine whilst on the road. He set up his vineyard and winery in the Walla Walla Valley in Washington State, releasing his first wine in 2001. Amazingly he is a self taught winemaker, though assisted by a great team. His showmanship got his wine noticed and enjoyed around the world. It is a masterful modern style that is great young.

Vinous (95)Made entirely from Phelps clone Syrah, the 2018 Syrah Powerline was aged for 24 months in 35% new French oak prior to bottling. It has a very Côte-Rôtie bull’s-blood character alongside iodine and volcanic ash on the nose. The palate is plush with a seamless texture and wonderful length. A very pretty core of dark fruits mingles with shades of creosote, Earl Grey tea and suggestions of orange zest. The flavor and aromatic range here are outstanding, and this brilliant wine isn’t going anywhere for another 10 years. |

Wine Advocate (94)We finished the tasting with the two Bordeaux blends. About as sexy and voluptuous as they come in the vintage, the 2011 Merlot Northridge Vineyard gives up loads of plum, violets, cassis, graphite and hints of spring flowers to go with a full-bodied, hedonistically styled profile on the palate. Possessing no hard edges, yet solid concentration and sweet tannin, it will put a smile on anyone’s face over the coming 7-82years. |
