Canon
Château Canon
Château Canon is a Premier Cru Classé (B) estate in Saint Émilion. It is located in a prime position on the top of the Saint Émilion limestone plateau overlooking the village itself. In 1760 is was acquired by a real pirate called Jacques Kanon. And soon afterwards Canon became established as a leading wine-producing estate. The key event in its modern history came in 1996 when Canon was acquired by Alain Wertheimer and Gerard Wertheimer, owners of the famous luxury goods manufacturer Chanel. The brothers financed a huge modernisation and investment programme, which is directly responsible for the string of fabulous recent vintages. The 34 ha is planted with 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Visitors to Chateau Canon can explore an amazing series of caves directly beneath the vines!

The Wine Independent (100)Composed of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Canon is deep garnet-purple in color. It offers up fragrant notes of mocha, violets, and licorice over a core of plum preserves and wild blueberries, plus a waft of Indian spices. The full-bodied palate is full-on gorgeous, delivering bright, energetic black and blue fruit layers with a lively backbone and super-fine, perfectly ripe tannins, finishing long, long, long. |

Wine Advocate (100)The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92)The 2019 Croix Canon is a fabulous second wine. Pliant and supple, the 2019 possesses terrific depth and resonance. Ripe dark cherry/plum, spice, lavender and rose petal are front and center. Readers will find a gorgeous Saint-Émilion that balances opulence and freshness, a pretty winning combination in my book. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2020 Croix-Canon was impressive out of barrel; it contains the highest-ever percentage of Cabernet Franc due to the mildew-affected Merlot. With a well-defined bouquet, it shows beautiful clarity, dark berry fruit commingling with boysenberry and just a hint of pressed iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, silky smooth and a very fine thread of acidity with a refined, quite saline finish. This is a Deuxième Vin with pedigree. |
