Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

The 2017 Barolo Carobric is one of the standouts in this range, as it often is. It has an extra dimension of depth and volume that works so well here. Sweet red cherry, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, anise and brambly notes build as this striking, expressive Barolo shows off its considerable charm. What a pretty wine it is.保税价格¥ 3,120.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is classy and polished right out of the gate. Sweet dark cherry, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are some of the nuances that open in the glass. Even with all of its immediacy, the 2017 has plenty of tannin. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. The 2017 is undoubtedly an attractive wine, but its best days lie ahead.保税价格¥ 2,475.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Prapò is yet another stellar wine in this range. Dark and brooding in the glass, the Prapò expresses all of the natural weight of this Serralunga cru, but with more overt fruit and a bit less tannic heft than is often the case. That should make the 2017 a real pleasure to drink, with just a handful of years in the cellar. Succulent black cherry, licorice, menthol, gravel and cured meats build into the heady finish.保税价格¥ 2,851.42 -

The 2017 Barolo Ravera is dazzling. Deep, potent and virile, the 2017 has a lot to say, but it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, smoke, game, lavender and licorice convey a real impression of gravitas that is reinforced by the wine’s overall feel. This powerhouse Barolo is magnificent today in a sort of old-school meets new-school style.保税价格¥ 2,851.42 -

The Parusso family believes in the aging potential of Nebbiolo worked in a manner that brings out more structure and tannic power. It is important to taste back vintages to better gauge the evolution of these wines. The 2017 Barolo Bussia opens a window onto the family vision. This was a hot vintage, and that helps bring in a note of sweet fruit, but this wine is plush and rich with savory tobacco, spice and fragrant tea. You taste the ripeness of the vintage with a hint of cherry marmalade, but otherwise the aromas veer toward autumn leaf, rusty nail and iron. The wine is structured, rigid and quite powerful. From the 2017 vintage, you still have a long runway to age this bottle.保税价格¥ 10,662.06 -

Very exotic Parusso Barolo as always, with dried fruit, strawberries and tangerines. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a powerful, intense finish. This is really structured. Needs four or five years to soften. Try in 2025.保税价格¥ 1,405.00 -

The 2017 Barolo San Giuseppe is a deep, powerful wine endowed with quite a bit of presence. Hints of sage, mint, sweet pipe tobacco and dried rose petal lend striking inner perfume. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo packs plenty of punch. I would give it a few years to soften.保税价格¥ 10,662.06 -
(6x75cl) 2017Piero Benevelli Barolo Le Coste di Monforte 2017 epitomises the elegance and complexity characteristic of top-tier Barolos. Crafted from hand-selected Nebbiolo grapes harvested from the esteemed Le Coste di Monforte vineyard in the heart of Piedmont, this vintage showcases meticulous vinification techniques. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the varietal’s delicate aromatics, followed by ageing in a combination of French and Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months, it achieves a harmonious balance between structure and finesse. The wine reveals a deep garnet hue, evolving into translucent ruby as it breathes. On the palate, layers of red cherries, tar, and rose petals intertwine with subtle hints of truffle and tobacco, supported by well-integrated tannins and a lingering, elegant finish. Piero Benevelli, renowned for his dedication to terroir expression and sustainable viticulture, delivers a Barolo that promises both immediate enjoyment and long-term aging potential. Ideal for discerning collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The 2017 Barolo Mosconi captures all the darkness, power and breadth this site is so well known for. Black cherry, plum, gravel, dried herbs and licorice infuse the 2017 with shades of nuance. This potent, strapping Barolo needs a few years in bottle to soften, although it is pretty alluring today.保税价格¥ 3,265.00 -

Plenty of blackberry and black cherry on the nose with violet and lavender undertones. Full-bodied with powerful tannins that flow across the palate. Ever enveloping and imposing, yet polished and impressive. Drink after 2024.保税价格¥ 2,460.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a beautiful, translucent wine that expresses too much of the best this site has to offer. Iron, dried herbs, chalk and white pepper give the Mosconi its signature aromatic profile. Pio Cesare's Mosconi is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. It's mid-weight structure and light (even for Nebbiolo) color can be deceiving. There is certainly plenty of punch here.保税价格¥ 2,520.00 -

Extremely perfumed with dark berries, cherries, strawberries and crushed stones. Full-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are muscular. Fantastic structure to this young Barolo, as well as great length. It grows on the palate with ease. Truly impressive. Incredible. Try after 2025.保税价格¥ 1,535.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is superb. Classy and poised, the 2017 captures all the personality of Bussia. The Colla Barolos typically need a few years to shine. I imagine that will be the case here as well. As attractive as the 2017 is today, the best is yet to come. Crushed flowers, spice, sweet pipe tobacco and incense lend considerable nuance to a core of sweet Nebbiolo fruit. What a pretty wine this is.保税价格¥ 1,705.00 -

Prunotto's 2017 Barolo is a very pretty, ethereal wine. Rose petal, spice, blood orange, mint and crushed red berry fruit are all nicely lifted. There is maybe just a bit of firmness to the tannin, but that also lends energy and drive. Drink this charming, gracious Barolo over the next decade or so.保税价格¥ 8,387.61 -

The 2017 Barolo Bussia is a dark, sensual wine that captures all of the nuance that makes the best wines from Barolo so beguiling. Spice, menthol, sage, licorice and dark cherry fruit all open in the glass. The 2017 is deep and layered, yet also remains light on its feet. I especially admire the transparency here.保税价格¥ 5,253.40 -
