Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (91-94)Bright, deep red. Medicinal hints of black cherry, raspberry, licorice and coffee. Juicy but imploded on entry, then tight in the middle and folded in on itself. Finishes very long and aromatic, but with a firm spine of tannins and acids dominating today. Meo found this seductive at the beginning but notes that the racking eight days before my visit is currently suppressing the texture of a number of his top bottlings. The yield here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare in 2008, added Meo, and the Brulees even lower than that. |

Vinous (91)Good full, deep red. Slightly reduced but nuanced aromas of currant, black raspberry, violet, licorice and sassafras. At once sweet and savory, with strong supporting structure to the chewy dark berry and spice flavors. A bit youthfully musclebound today but this very young wine possesses the energy and depth to reward patience. |

Vinous (90+)Bright medium red. Reticent but aromatic nose combines red berries, burnt orange, minerals, flowers, cardamom and star anise. Enters silky and sweet but ultimately displays less depth and concentration than the captivating nose suggests. Doesn't quite deliver in the middle palate but finishes with good sneaky length and harmonious tannins. Will this expand with time in bottle? |

Vinous (93+)The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes is notable for many outstanding qualities, starting with its totally striking, captivating bouquet. Firm yet elegant tannins frame the fruit in this hugely promising yet very young wine. The balance is simply first-class, suggesting the future is very bright. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Four barrels made from 103 year-old vines. The yield in 2008 was just 12 hl/ha (‘We lose money on it’, according to Laurent Ponsot). Very opulent with a hauntingly layered nose. Almost more reminiscent of a cherry liqueur than a wine. Great energy – rather like a healthy drink for its real spine of life. Subtle, sweet, wild and long but with excellent freshness. ‘Probably the sort of wine that was drunk 200 years ago,’ Ponsot claims. |

Vinous (92+)Pale straw-yellow color. Peach, flowers, hazelnut, spices and smoky oak on the nose, with some musky mango and green papaya emerging with aeration. Then much tighter in the mouth than the nose suggests; in fact, this is quite dry and youthfully ungiving today, hinting only at fruit pit and showing firm acidity. But this long wine boasts plenty of underlying depth. I'd forget this one for five years. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)(in tank) Lemon and honeysuckle on the nose. At once rich and taut, with firm flavors of crystallized lemon peel and stone kept in check by strong acidity. This very tight, firmly constructed wine finishes with terrific grip. From vines averaging nearly 35 years of age. |

Vinous (96)Bright yellow with a green tinge. Classic Montée de Tonnerre aromas of lemon ice, crushed rock, iodiney minerality and white flowers. floral, lemon ice, straight and classic. Tactile, juicy and utterly gripping--in fact still almost painful today. Powerful salty minerality and penetrating acidity currently dominate the wine's lemon oil, grapefruit and floral flavors, with the wine showing a weightless impression. The dusty mineral-driven finish stains the palate and builds inexorably. (When I first tasted this wine from the barrel, I suggested that it might be the longest Chablis premier cru of the vintage.) Drink the 2010 for lunch now but hold this magical wine for another couple years, as its spring is still tightly coiled. This was my favorite wine of the tasting. The 2014 and 2010 vintages may be richer and deeper, as Isabelle Raveneau suggested to me three years ago, but this '08 is utterly classic. (12.69% alcohol; 3.14 pH; 4.4 g/l acidity; the days were sunny but the nights were quite chilly during the relatively early harvest of 2008, which concentrated the sugars and acidity, noted Isabelle Raveneau) |

Vinous (93-95)Pale, green-tinged yellow. Mint, minerals, citrus fruits and a strong note of anise on the nose. Densely packed but at the same time racy, with terrific energy and cut to the flavors of lemon, lime and crushed stone. With its bracing, almost youthfully sharp finish, this really stimulates the taste buds. |

Wine Advocate (94)Groffier’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses shows stunning balance in its layers of intricately perfumed fruit. This is a totally beguiling wine laced with extraordinary elegance and an inviting, captivating personality. Sweet, fragrant fruit lingers on the delicate yet tense finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. |

Burghound (91)Initially there was a touch of reduction so be sure to decant this. With a few minutes of air pretty aromas of complex and cool red pinot fruit, earth and a hint of humus give way to equally earthy medium weight flavors that possess good volume and a fine muscularity, all wrapped in a very firm but not aggressive finish. This understated effort should be lovely in a few years. |
