Immensely concentrated and strikingly structurally refined, this is a brilliant Clos de Bèze that's more classically balanced than the more overtly ripe 2015.

Good medium ruby. High-pitched violet perfume lifts the aroma of ripe black cherry. Wonderfully suave, intense and refined, with a pungently fresh quality that reminded me of cut grass. This highly concentrated wine has perfectly integrated acidity, as well as a stronger limestone character than usual. In a rather masculine style but also seamless and suave. Finishes with outstanding length and class, the tannins totally buffered by fruit and minerals. Mounir Saouma noted that this wine has been great since the beginning.

There is almost painful intensity to the beautifully delineated and mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that possess a highly refined textured before culminating in an almost crisp, moderately austere and wonderfully persistent finale that is quite firmly structured. Bright, dark red; a bit more saturated than the Mazis. Knockout, slightly liqueur-like aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, boysenberry, rose petal, licorice and mint, complicated by musky soil tones. Pure silk on the palate but with its uncanny thickness of texture leavened by energy. This wonderfully tactile, savory wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and finishes with powerful medicinal reserve and incredible building length. And yet there's no impression of weightiness here. This could be enjoyed right now with the right piece of meat, but I'd rather lay it down for eight or ten years.

The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet that is focused and direct, offering red and black fruit, crushed stone and more terroir expression than the Mazoyères. The palate is medium-bodied, the sappy red fruit on the entry laced with marmalade and dried quince, and grippy in the mouth, with a touch of spiciness, although it does not fan out on the finish as I hoped. Hopefully it will fill out with bottle age.
