The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru includes 50% whole cluster, mainly to fill the vat, and is now plowed by horse due to the spacing of the vines. The delineated bouquet features red berry fruit infused with pressed rose petal, quite minerally in style. Bright yellow. Musky pineapple and lemon aromas offer a bit less lift today than the Cailleret but plenty of allure. Less sweet and pristine in the middle palate than the Cailleret, but a bit thicker in texture, with the stony underpinning and spine of lemony acidity to give it a seriously penetrating quality. A sexy element of reduction adds to this young wine's considerable appeal. Conveys a strong, tactile impression of dry extract without any rough edges and finishes salty and long. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, although the reduction dominates the finish at the moment. The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Let Folatières 1er Cru spent 12 months in barrel (228- and 600-liter) and at the time of tasting was in stainless steel. It has a stoic, almost aloof bouquet that does not want to come out to play. The well-balanced palate is tannic on the entry. The brisk, terse finish indicates that it is in for the long haul. I like the salinity here. The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. It has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and pressed rose petal scents, plus just a hint of black truffle in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It has a well-defined, quite tertiary bouquet, the whole bunch quite expressive at the moment, imparting light black pepper and clove aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Matured in 50% new oak, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Corbeaux 1er Cru is a wine whose extraction Bachelet told me he has reduced from 2014, as he felt the clay soils made it too masculine. It is divine on the nose, offering pixelated red berry fruit mixed with oyster shell and limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, perfect acidity and more freshness and tension than it knows what to do with. The 2020 Corton Grand Cru is the usual blend from Clos du Roi (Bressandes and Les Renardes leased from the Prince de Mérode family), and it was picked on 26 August at 24.6hL/ha. This is focused and a little backward on the nose; it needs a little encouragement from the glass. It rewards patience with subtle potpourri and incense aromas. An orange rind touch complements the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a satisfying degree of edginess and delineation. Sour cherry nuances underlie the carapace of higher-toned blue fruit with a persistent and succulent finish. Maybe it just needs a little more mineralité on the aftertaste, nevertheless, it remains a fine Corton that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. 454 cases produced. Full-bodied, voluptuous and layered, it's rich and muscular, with lively acids and plenty of powdery tannin. Already so multi-faceted and open on the nose. Very tangy and finely spiced on the palate too. There’s density and elegant tannic structure but so well dressed in light but fine fruit that you barely see the framework. Fine spicy grip on the long fresh finish. Silky, scented, gorgeous. Rich and explosive on the palate, yet backed up with significant structure and pure intensity, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. First and foremost, the Échézeaux is a wine of pure texture.
