Dense but tightly wound, showing terrific energy to its chewy flavors of lemon oil, flowers and salty minerals. The slowly building, chewy, gripping finish suggests that this wine will blossom with time in bottle. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
Three barrels, one each across three years. Robust, glowing purple, this wine is full of fruit, not quite the detailed latticework of the very finest Ruchottes, but nonetheless more and more detail starts to appear the longer this wine stays in the mouth. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru comes from around 55-60 years old vines, matures in 30% new oak and 70% whole bunches. This has a ripe and refined bouquet with hints of blue fruit developing in the glass, very floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru matures in 30% new oak and with 50% whole bunches (the domaine feels that more than this percentage is excessive.) The bouquet is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, plenty of red berry fruit mixed with hints of pain d’épices and touches of cassis. It has a very well defined bouquet, very harmonious with red cherries, cranberry and crushed stone aromas. The 2014 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Millandes was picked a little earlier just to keep the acidity from the berries that were affected by millerandage. It has a well defined bouquet with light gravel scents infusing the blackberry and briary fruit. This is very correct but also very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly earthy red berry fruit. (Lafon bought seven hectares of east-facing vines on clay-rich soil in Viré in 2009, including some that date back to the 1930s; the youngest vines here are at least 30 years of age): Bright lemon-yellow. Intriguing aromas of pear, white peach, flowers, minerals, menthol and white pepper. Pliant and thick but very juicy and fresh; lovely lemony cut (4.4 acidity) gives a light touch to the fruit. Shows strong spine and structure without especially high acidity. Lovely fine-grained wine with class. This vineyard needed a lot of work, noted Gon. Medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, this searingly intense and assertively mineral Saint-Aubin brought tears to my eyes.
