The 2019 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru, a monopole of the domaine, is completely de-stemmed and matured in 30% new oak. It has one of my favourite bouquets with gorgeous shimmering red fruit laced with rose petal and light incense aromas, all beautifully defined. The palate is slightly reduced but that does not disguise the intense, mineral-driven red fruit that merges into darker fruit and more saline notes towards the finish. The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru comprises four barrels, of which one is new. It has a charming, well-defined and very pure bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is silky-smooth right from the start, very cohesive and displaying a fine bead of acidity; it actually reminds me of Michel Lafarge in style.
