The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru really captures the complexity and intellectual capacity of this propitious Premier Cru with beautifully defined, mineral-driven black fruit, touches of freshly rolled tobacco developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied with blueberry and cassis notes towards the sensual finish. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru was picked on the first day of harvest, along with the Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères. Containing 50% whole bunch, it is very perfumed on the nose, the most floral of Dugat-Py’s Premier Crus, but thankfully the gushing violet and peony aromas do not obscure the fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more understated than I anticipated after the aromatics. This ends up a streamlined Petite Chapelle of wonderful delineation and salinity (though maybe the Champeaux has a little more complexity overall at this early juncture). The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy," blended with 40% whole bunch, has an intense bouquet of small dark cherries mixed with raspberry and black currant pastille scents; there is fine delineation here. All of the fruit is 100% destemmed, and fermentations take place in concrete tanks with gentle punch-downs twice a day, which they prefer over pump-overs to limit the amount of oxygen ingress. The juice is left in the tank for about two weeks before being racked to barrel for malolactic and ageing; the juice is left to settle for two days prior to being racked to barrel. A fair amount of new oak is used in the wines; the village wine, for example, is aged in 60% new François’ Frères oak barrels for an average of 16 months before bottling without filtration. Each label is a benchmark for quality, and they are often hallmarked by a generous and elegant style.
