Rarely do we encounter a wine as exquisite as the Bernard Dugat-Py Monthelie Tres Vieilles Vignes 2019. Exclusively sourced from the prized oldest vines of Burgundy's revered Monthelie commune, this French beauty elegantly exhibits complex earthy hues, layered with rich black fruits, spice and an underpinning minerality. Sidestepping modern oenological antics, Bernard Dugat-Py steadfastly honours traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques, particularly evident in this offering. Hand-harvested grapes undergo extended fermentation, maturing in high-quality French oak to enhance depth and structure. The product is a velvety Pinot Noir, enticingly aromatic, balanced and refined. The Dugat-Py family’s winemaking legacy, stretching back to the 12th century, permeates every delectable drop. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2019 Monthélie Clos Les Champs Fulliot 1er Cru comes from 0.9 hectares of vine. It was the second parcel to be picked because of its warm microclimate, yet I find more precision on the Les Duresses. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of dark chocolate and tar. There is more elegance and terroir expression on the Les Duresses this year. |

Vinous (91)The 2019 Monthélie Village is a little more backward on the nose compared to the Auxey-Duresses, well defined but just a bit timid at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, nicely structured with dark berry fruit towards the finish. |
