This definitely represents a new beginning for the Clos des Lambrays, beginning with a dizzying array of aromas that range from high-toned red fruits to ripe, plummy black fruit, all touched with spice, and a suggestion of wild herbs and fresh flowers. After blending there was an average of 80% whole cluster fermentation. The 2019 Meursault Santenots 1er Cru, aged for 12 months in barrel and racked into stainless steel on the lees, comes across a little laconic and backward on the nose with light smoke and beeswax aromas. The palate is better with good weight and concentration on the entry. Touches of dried honey and a little brioche, fresh, if uncomplicated compared to the Volnays. The 2019 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru follows the Taillepieds and maybe it should have been the other way round since this is much more closed and broody. Earthy red berry fruit, touches of truffle and bay eventually emerge from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with solid backbone, not the most elegant Champans as there is a bit of grip and sinew on the finish. But because of that I suspect it will age extremely well. The 2019 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru has a typically aristocratic nose with layers of red and black fruit infused with shaved black truffle, crushed stone and pressed iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy saturated tannins, a voluminous Clos des Ducs that fills the mouth. Maybe a little spicier than usual, there is a generous pinch of cracked black pepper towards the finish and its normal extremely persistent aftertaste. The 2019 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru (an anomaly since most producers label as "Les Fremiets") is very engaging on the nose with beautiful potpourri and rose petal infused red fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with succulent red cherries, cranberry and strawberry.
