The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has an attractive nose of brambly red fruit, orange rind, sous-bois and a touch of wilted rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with furry tannins, plenty of dusky red berry fruit with white pepper and sage. Fine weight, perhaps a little rustic towards the finish but it gains weight and coheres with aeration. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has quite a sweet and candied bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant jam, fig and light rose petal scents. A touch of blood orange emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and ripe, though it does not quite deliver the complexity of its peers on the flattering, slightly confit finish and opts to play it safe. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
Vinous (89+)
The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru presents a mixture of red and black fruit with touches of vanilla and inkwell coming through with time. The medium-bodied palate offers saturated tannins, chewy black fruit and some wood on the finish that will need to be integrated. I quite like the delineation, so I will be optimistic about the wine’s evolution.

Bright cherry fruits with flecks of ethereal flowers and sweet spices. Sweet, rich and bold on the palate with the fruit and tannin perfectly balanced. Bright acids, crisp red fruit and lingering sweet vanilla on the finish.

Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet of opulent dark cherries and briary notes, the 70-80% new oak beautifully integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red fruit on the entry, laced with blood orange, white pepper and touches of sage and bay leaf. There is a bit of new oak to be integrated on the finish, so give this several years in bottle.

Following the commendable Vosne-Romanée, I have to admit that the 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes as a bit of a disappointment. It feels overwhelmed by the warmth of that summer. The nose lacks a bit of definition and has a metallic note that aeration cannot dislodge. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight chewiness on the entry. It is a solid Echézeaux that is missing finesse. Though the wine delivers decent weight on the finish, fact is that I actually prefer the aforementioned Village Cru.

Cask sample. Rich and sweet – and much more forward than the village Vosne! Layers and neatness. Good intensity and this should have a long and rather glorious life ahead.
