The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, the 30% whole bunch lending a subtle earthiness on the midpalate, although I would like a little more substance to show on the finish. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru includes one-third whole bunch. It has an intense, detailed bouquet of red currant, touches of iodine and pressed iris aromas gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and beautifully judged acidity. So harmonious and silky in texture that you almost do not notice the persistence on the finish. Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha holding is made up of two parcels, both of them in the best bit of the Grand Cru. Aged in 40% new wood, this is a not a blockbuster style by any means, emphasising freshness, balance and harmony instead. The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a very candied, aniseed-tinged bouquet that contains impressive intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, lovely orange-zest infused red fruit, gentle but insistent grip with an arresting, white pepper/spicy finish that leaves the tongue tingling. The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru showed just a little reduction on the nose, but that blows away with modest swirling to reveal blackberries, raspberry coulis, touches of melted tar and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. It displays a fine crescendo in the mouth, until it reaches the effervescent finish. Always one of Etienne and Mathilde Grivot's stand-out Premier Cru reds, this is not the most immediate of their cuvées at a young age, often displaying some grip and tannic backbone as well as a hint of meaty reduction, but the fruit concentration and depth is remarkable here, supported by chalky minerality and scented 30% new wood. Planted way back in 1926, this 0.5ha parcel is always the most complex wine at the domaine. Violet and aniseed scents segue into a palate that's smooth, glossy and textured with bramble and black cherry fruit, some chalky undertones, stylish oak and subtle reduction. The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has quite a sweet and candied bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant jam, fig and light rose petal scents. A touch of blood orange emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and ripe, though it does not quite deliver the complexity of its peers on the flattering, slightly confit finish and opts to play it safe. Perfectly ripe strawberries with raspberry and citrus undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with really fine tannins that are nicely wrapped in ripe fruit. There’s a savory, lightly meaty highlight to the flavors. It’s long and complex in the finish. Really balanced and attractive now, but will deliver even more in the future. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru comes from a parcel that lies just above Richebourg and receives 50% whole bunch. Now this is one cru that comes across a little trop on the nose, displaying a soupçon of volatility. The palate is sweet on the entry with dark cherries, loganberry and sea salt notes. Fresh pale primrose. The bouquet is undeveloped at first but shows promise. A little bit of sulphur checks the back of the throat. Really fine intensity, white fruit, a touch of greengage, untogether at the moment but with fine potential. Indeed, there is immense potential, this may be the most concentrated wine of the day. The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is armed with precocious black cherries, cassis, crushed violets and a touch of iodine on the nose, aromatics that have no intention of holding back. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, wonderful precision and sense of energy. Almost playful toward the very pure, sensual, vivid finish. The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru has a much more composed and refined, almost understated bouquet compared to the Bonnes-Mares. Red berry fruit, sous-bois, touches of sandalwood and bay leaf aromas develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Lively and full of tension, displaying just a touch of piquancy toward the spicy finish and a very long tail.
