The 2018 Meursault Clos-de-la-Barre has a reserved and quite austere bouquet at the moment, which surprising considering the growing season. This is a stubborn Meursault. The 2018 Monthélie Les Duresses has a tightly wound bouquet, the fruit a little darker than I find on the nascent 2019, yet still well defined. The 2018 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru comes from iron-rich clayey soils and contains two-thirds whole cluster this year. It has a lovely bouquet of red berry fruit laced with slate and bay leaf aromas, very well defined and absorbing the 25% new oak easily. The palate is well balanced with a mineral-rich entry, a fine bead of acidity and touches of brown spice sprinkled over the red fruit. The 2018 Beaune Les Sizies 1er Cru is made with one-third whole cluster this year. It has a slightly smudged bouquet of raspberry and strawberry fruit that needs to attain more clarity by the time of bottling. The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and underwent one of the earliest malolactics, finishing by January 2019. It has a mixture of red and black fruit tinged with brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, the whole cluster so well integrated that you would guess it contained far less. The elegant finish is tinged with bay leaf and white pepper notes. The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes sees 40% new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and floral scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening and marmalade and tangerine notes infusing the red fruit. The pretty, very expressive finish maybe just misses the depth of, say, the 2016.
