Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)The Bâtard is still in barrel, without any sulphur adjustment, so in fact needs refreshing which will happen, especially when it goes into tank. Primrose colour, ripe pears with some passion fruit. A significant wealth of fruit but the final wine is not easy to be sure of at this stage. Clean pure fruit returns, not so obvious acidity. This wine is likely to develop better than it is currently showing. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Benjamin used some whole bunch vinification, which he did not in Clos St-Denis. Fullish purple. Not yet racked so this fine Clos de la Roche will gain in purity what it already has in density. A splendid long rich finish, high class fruit throughout. A little more body than the Clos St-Denis. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)(5 Star Wine) Mostly from old vines, a good half planted between 1948 and 1952. Translucent lemon and lime colour. The bouquet is not ready to unfurl yet there is a sense of sublime purity about the nose. A wine in perfect harmony on its wide bench of white fruit. Just a little touch of spice behind, good acidity. Sign up for this! Drink from 2032-2045. |
