With generous notes of smoked meats and game as well as a kiss of iron and iodine, this full-bodied red is just thrilling on the palate, with fine tannins as well as good spine of acidity. The 2018 Nuestra Senora Del Tercer Gemelo checks in as a Petite Sirah-dominated blend that includes 22.1% Mourvèdre, 11.5% Graciano, and 3.4% Viognier. It’s the finest Petite Sirah to ever pass my lips and tops out my scale. Insanely good cassis, iron, bloody blue fruits, violets, graphite, and peppery herbs all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, incredibly seamless texture, no hard edges, and a brilliant finish. Burghound (89-92)
A brooding and very earthy nose is more deeply pitched and very Gevrey in character. The rich, concentrated and more powerful medium-bodied flavors are firmly structured and serious while exhibiting touch of bitter pit fruit and youthful austerity on the balanced and highly persistent finish. The 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes was reduced by 60% in quantity by frost. A mix of six parcels with 40% whole cluster, it offers quite earthy red berry fruit on the nose. The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges La Charmotte includes 45% whole bunch this year. It has a well-defined bouquet that displays wonderful Pinoté. The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a superb bouquet of brambly red fruit, quite ferrous in style, displaying hints of dried blood and meat juices. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)
Deep purple more than black, the nose is classier and more together than the Clos Vougeot. Actually this is brilliant as soon as the nose starts to open. Wow! This has all the classic depth of Les St-Georges but it seems to have a Vosne side heady joy as well. A huge glorious mouthful, a little white pepper tingle (45% whole bunches), but a royal quality of deep dark raspberry fruit, sensational finish. Easily the best I have ever tasted here. Bright full red. Wild, expressive aromas of raspberry, flinty minerality and pungent spices. Delivers outstanding power and palate-staining richness, with intense, sweet berry and dark cherry fruit complicated by saline, soil-driven minerality. This complex and complete, if youthfully strict, wine is the total package. The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas was completely destemmed. It has a pure, focused bouquet of dark cherries and black currant aromas, plus just a touch of pressed iris flower. The 2020 Cornas Chaillot comes from a mix of lieux-dits (it's mostly Chaillot) as well as some younger vines. It's an incredible wine in its own right and certainly doesn't give much in terms quality to its big brother. Awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, violets, crushed stone, and bouquet garni-like notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, and ultra-fine tannins. It's a touch more finesse-driven and elegant compared to the Reynard and should round into form with just 5-7 years of bottle age. Brilliant violet. An expansive bouquet evokes dark berry liqueur, Indian spices, violet candy and incense, brightened by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering pliant black raspberry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors complemented by exotic five-spice powder and white pepper accents. Brilliant purple. Dark fruit, floral and spice qualities on the hugely perfumed, expansive nose, along with suggestions of incense, olive and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with powerful, youthfully concentrated blueberry, cassis, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of zesty acidity. On another level, the 2018 Cornas Reynard is a tour de force and up there with the finest Cornas to ever pass my lips. Deep purple-hued, with a gorgeous perfume of crème de cassis, blackberries, powdered granite, violets, and peppery spice, it’s full-bodied and brings another level of elegance in its tannins as well as density on the palate. The 2019 Saumur Champigny Clos de L'Echelier is round and gently calm, almost meditative, but the chalky soil keeps things fresh and moving along despite the warmth of the growing season. From vines planted in 1904 that sit on both flint and limestone, which is a rare combination in Saumur-Champigny, the 2019 Les Memoires is all purity of coulis-like fruit. It offers incredible concentration yet floats in the mouth like a weightless cloud. If there were a Cabernet Franc equivalent of Chambolle Musigny, this would be it. I love it. I have tasted this producer's wines for a time now and adore the grenaches. Often my preference is for the Sands of Time cuvée but in 2021, a vintage of such effortless quality, This Charming Man ascends. Bitter red-fruit, orange-pastille, tea-tree, dried-thyme, bracken and sandalwood riffs are beautifully compressed by a phalanx of brushwood tannins. Mid-weighted Nebbiolo vibes. Very fine. Based on 22- to 40-year-old vines (80% French and 20% Swiss clones) and fermented with 40% whole clusters, the 2022 Malanser Pinot Noir displays a clear and bright ruby color and opens with clear, fresh and bright fruit with a coolish character. Aged in 70% new French pièces and bottled in January this year, this is a silky, dense, tart, fresh and juicy yet clear and transparent Pinot with a filigreed structure and a long, intense, saline and spicy finish. The acidity and tannins are perfectly interwoven, and the power and intensity are combined with remarkable finesse. This is another great Pinot Noir from Malans. 13.5% stated alcohol. The 2017 Wanderer’s Heart is a multiregional blend of Rhône varieties driven by the Grenache, matured in used oak with higher proportion of whole clusters on the Grenache. It has a floral, pure bouquet that features light scents of broom, fennel and white pepper. The palate is well balanced with gentle grip in the mouth, nice structure (perhaps more so than expected) and a precise, lightly spiced finish where the Mourvèdre imparts a subtle medicinal note. The 2018 Wanderer’s Heart has a lovely, lilting bouquet of wild strawberry, dark cherries, pressed rose petals and light fynbos scents.
