Luca Roagna's father was born in 1953, and that year also marks the first vintage this wine was produced by Luca's grandfather Alfredo, who was deeply convinced by the potential of this vineyard and went into deep financial debt after the war in order to purchase this land. The 2019 Barbaresco Pajè is muscular and firm with dark fruit and grippy tannins. There is a chalky quality that reflects the site's limestone soils. It has lovely purity on the palate, revealing fine tannins and balanced, fresh acidity with a weightless feel. I quite prefer this wine to both of the Paje wines. Luca Roagna's parents bought this plot in 1990,m and vine age varies from 35 to 60 years old. Different soils types are spread throughout the parcels. The 2019 Barolo Pira shows a beautiful mineral note with a metallic side that comes through with blazing intensity. It matches earthy sensations and pretty floral notes. The 2015 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti needs a bit of time in the glass for an initial whiff of reduction to blow off. As it often is, the Pira Vecchie Viti is an exotic wine built on an intriguing mix of aromatic presence and understated structure. Aside from the Barbaresco Crichet, the 2018 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is my favorite of these 2018s from Roagna. It displays the elements of the wines from younger vines and intensifies them, with notes of preserved strawberries and raspberries, dewy earth, fresh herbs, sweet flowers, and wet stones. It’s powerful on the palate without weight, offering ripe fruit, savory mineral and salty earth notes, and terrific, ripe structure. The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Chaignots has darker fruit on the nose than the village cru: blackberry and raspberry, light sous-bois scents emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, hints of mocha lining the red berry fruit with quite a forward, sumptuous finish that comes as a surprise given the vintage. Decanter (95)
Les Vaucrains is marked by its proximity to the combe at the southern end of Nuits-St-Georges, which gives the wine an added lift of freshness. Burghound (89-92)
Outstanding Top value. An ultra-fresh nose speaks of ripe red and dark berries plus an abundance of earth character. There is better volume and density to the energetic medium weight flavors where the supporting tannins are unusually fine in the context of what is typical for a Nuits villages. The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 100% whole cluster and is matured in one-third new oak. It has a really beautiful bouquet that you could easily mistake for Christophe Roumier’s: blackberry, blueberry, a hint of crushed violet and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of fine-grain tannin, the new oak perfectly sutured into the black and blue fruit with superb delineation and focus towards the silky smooth finish. The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was bottled just before Christmas 2018. It has an engaging, almost beguiling bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, sous-bois, light tobacco aromas and a discreet marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and slightly ferrous red berry fruit. Racked three or four weeks prior to my visit, the 2018 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains contains 10% Gamay. It has a crisp red cherry and wild strawberry bouquet with veins of blue fruit. The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge has a precise bouquet with commendable precision for a regional red, attractive rose petal scents emerging with time. The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a tight, quite backward nose that demands more coaxing than Christophe Roumier's Les Amoureuses , but it is easy to fall for the dark brambly fruit mixed with sous-bois and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins, zesty and quite citric, offering desiccated orange peel and blood orange flavors. Fresh and sorbet-like on the finish. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru comes from 80-years old vines that was harvest over five morning, one hour each day and vinified in the same vat of course. Blended with 50% whole bunch and matured in 25% new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with rose petals, red berry fruit, just a very faint hints of menthol in the far distance. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh and vibrant, lightly spiced towards the finish that feels linear and strict. Matured in 25% new oak and 90% whole bunches, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru is the most opulent of Groffier’s 2019s with kirsch and orange zest infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a little oak to be subsumed on the entry. Good weight, quite muscular for a Chambolle with liberally sprinkled black pepper enhancing the finish.
