The rise of Fifth Growth Pauillac Château Pontet-Canet is undoubtedly 'one of the greatest success stories to come out of Bordeaux in recent years' in the eyes of Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW because it has 'raised itself to super-second, nay first growth, quality standards'. From the massive increase in demand we have seen over the previous several vintages, we would certainly agree with this statement.
Rising on a constant upward trajectory since being acquired by the Tesseron family in 1975, Pontet-Canet has long been enamoured for its superb terroir. Located next to Château Mouton Rothschild, it has become regarded as a savvy buy for consistently offering Second, or even First Growth, quality at a fraction of the price. They are also one of the pioneers of sustainability on the Left Bank having been the first major Bordeaux Châteaux to convert to biodynamics, having been certified by Biodyvin in 2010 and Demeter in 2014.

Unquestionably one of the gems in the vintage is the 2008 Pontet-Canet, which reminds me of the 2005 with its concentrated, deep, powerful style. Beautiful dark fruits, graphite, obvious minerality, and classic Pauillac lead pencil notes all emerge from this still youthful, full-bodied, and pure 2008 that’s 4-5 years away from maturity and will keep for 30+ years. Composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Pontet-Canet gives up beautifully fragrant notes of rosehip tea, lilacs, cinnamon stick, cloves, dried leaves and underbrush with a core of kirsch, raspberry coulis, warm plums and red and black currants plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing, minerally and wonderfully elegant with a well-played texture of approachable, plush tannins and a long, fragrant finish. Beautiful. A sensational Pauillac as well as the finest wine from this château since the 2009 (although the 2010 might have something to say about that), the 2022 Château Pontet-Canet sports a deep purple hue as well as a heavenly perfume of crème de cassis, smoke, incense, leafy tobacco, and chocolate. This beauty has sensational purity, a deep, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, flawless balance, and incredible precision and detail in its aromas and flavors. Despite its opulence and power, it has a solid underlying structure, and its tannins are sweet and polished; it has remarkable depth and concentration, and it just does everything right. I wouldn't be surprised to see this firm up slightly over the coming 3-5 years, although I don't expect it to truly shut down. It should have 40, 50, if not 60 years of overall longevity. The 2022 is based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new barrels, 35% in amphora, and the rest in once-used oak.保税价格￥ 4,235.00 -
