Hubert Lignier
About Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate. The domaine was founded in 1880 when Jacques Lignier purchased plots of vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the 1960s the domaine was expanded to 8ha. Today the domaine is managed by the father and son partnership of Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who make 24 different wines at all levels of classification. Wine-making here is described by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) as “classical”.
It is fair to say that Domaine Hubert Lignier flies just a little below the radar screen of many more casual Burgundy fans. But to those in the know, their flagship Clos-de-La-Roche Grand Cru is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s hidden gems. And their other Grand and Premier Cru expressions are surprisingly (for Burgundy) affordable wines.

Wine Advocate (88-90)Produced from purchased fruit and vinified with one-third whole clusters, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes (négoce) bursts with aromas of raspberries, berries, woodsmoke and sweet soil tones. It's medium to full-bodied, succulent and fine-boned, with a delicate core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from two terrors and is an acquisition of fruit. The nose is quite backward at first and does not quite slip into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry and strawberry entry, fine acidity, quite fleshy as you would hope from a Chambolle with the 30% whole bunch imparting a welcome spiciness on the finish. Very fine. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has (another) very well defined bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and sous-bois aromas, a little stemminess in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, impressive depth, but what underpins this premier cru is the freshness and tension on the finish. It should age with style. Superb. |
