Grosset
Grosset is one of Australia’s finest Riesling producers and one of the top white winemakers in the world today. Established in 1981 by winemaker Jeffrey Grosset, they produce premium single vineyard wines from the higher altitudes of Clare Valley. A small production estate (only 11,000 cases produced annually) from twenty hectares of estate vineyards, they are able to preserve the character and individuality of the wines. Polish Hill and Springvale are two of the world’s finest dry Rieslings and rightly so are the most collected white wines in Australia.

The very dry season produced a tiny crop of grapes in the Gaia vineyard barely half a kilogram per vine. The 2021 is a blend of 95% cabernet sauvignon with 5% cabernet franc. This is the best Gaia I can recall ever tasting. The colour is a profound and very bright purple-red and it has a bell-clear, ultra-youthful mulberry/blueberry aroma which is fruit driven, the 45% new oak input barely noticeable as the fruit is so powerful and vibrant. An absolutely gorgeous wine, the clarity and power of its flavour is gobsmacking. Concentration is at a very high level but so are balance, harmony and elegance. A blinder of a wine. An exceptional vintage for this wine, with such intense aromas of lime and sweet flowers, as well as hints of white nectarine and wet stone in the background. The palate has density and sleekly refined shape that drives so long. Lime juice throughout, and some almost pithy density builds into the finish, supported by driving acidity.
