In the hands of the Ricasoli family since 1141, Castello di Brolio is the oldest wine estate in Italy and the 'most representative winery of the Chianti region' (Decanter).

The illustrious Barone Ricasoli has a long and storied history influencing the wine of Chianti but it is their modern development under the helm of the 32nd Baron, Francesco Ricasoli, that has been really turning heads.

Renewing the quality and personality that made Brolio wines famous, Francesco and his team have been doing 'exciting work', in the words of the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, by extensively mapping the soil types and terroir of different zones of the estate to match them perfectly with the correct clone of Sangiovese. While their work still continues, the long list of award-winning wines Barone Ricasoli have created over the last 20 years shows that innovation combined with their unrivalled history is really paying off.

From 'one of the best past vintages in Tuscany' (DC), their Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016 is a 'beautiful wine, dense, rich and lasting' (WA). Scoring 97 points from James Suckling, 94 points from the Wine Advocate and 94 points from Decanter, it is clearly a step up from most Gran Selezione on the market.

Made from a blend of 97% Sangiovese and 3% Abrusco, a local 'ancient grape variety' (DC), it has nuanced notes of spice, leather and sweet tobacco but the 'fruit really shines through' (JS). Characterised by its 'freshness, precision and cellar-worthiness', all these qualities result in one 'very elegant but also food-friendly package' (WA).

Offered today at only £180 per case IB, Barone Ricasoli have shown what is possible in Chianti Classico when winemakers take a Burgundian, terroir-driven approach. This is a fantastic wine from one of the 'oldest family-owned estates in the world' (DC). +Show Less
