Wine Advocate classified 1996 as “Extraordinary” and scores it 97 points as a vintage, better than 2002 and every other vintage except 2008 (which we continue to shout to clients to buy all they can of!). It is a joy, therefore, to be able to offer a limited parcel of two of the cream of this spectacular vintage direct from our private reserves in London: Dom Pérignon Oenothèque and Krug.
Dom Pérignon Oenothèque 1996 (3x75cl) – this wine was rebranded as “P2” with the 1998 release, and so the 1996 Oenothèque is the last vintage ever made. This gives it huge interest from the global army of Dom Pérignon collectors. Disgorged in 2008, this wine scored 97 points from Wine Advocate. Critic Antonio Galloni says “the balance between fruit and acidity is awesome. This is a marvelous DP Oenothèque.” This is drinking beautifully right now, but will cellar and improve at least until 2026. We have 10 cases available which have been stored under bond by a leading private collectors since release.
Krug 1996 (6x75cl) – is a ‘bucket list’ Champagne. No doubt about that. Reviewing the wine in 2008 for Wine Advocate, expert Antonio Galloni scored 98 points and wrote:
“This multi-dimensional, textured Champagne is at the early part of its drinking window and promises to deliver an incredible drinking experience over the coming decades.”
This also has 99 points from Wine Spectator who called it a “powerful, majestic Champagne”. No disgorgement date was given, but all the critics agree that this is a Champagne for the ages, drinking perfectly now but built to last until 2040! This is rare on the secondary market now. We have 6 cases which are part of the same collection as the DP. Stored under bond in London since release.
