Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha holding is made up of two parcels, both of them in the best bit of the Grand Cru. Aged in 40% new wood, this is a not a blockbuster style by any means, emphasising freshness, balance and harmony instead. The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, quite mineral-driven with crushed rock and pressed iris flower combined with dark cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very focused with quite a strict and saline finish. Burghound (89-92)
Moderate reduction is sufficient to dominate the nose today. Otherwise, there is almost painful intensity to the sleek medium-bodied flavors that also conclude in a slightly lean and decidedly austere finale. A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. (5-Star Wine) A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. The Richebourg is just a notch above the same domaine's Romanée-St-Vivant in 2012, as it is at several other domaines, but it's a close run thing. This is tighter, more focused and limestone fresh, with a hint of "good" reduction, considerable restraint, sweet raspberry and red cherry fruit and pithy focus and length. (5-Star Wine) A noble purple in colour. A fresh suave even plump fruit on the nose, pure in its raspberry profile. Three barrels, two from Cavin who Charles likes (he uses five cooper in all). (25% vendange entier): Good bright, full red. Complex, inviting nose combines raspberry, rose petal and orange zest. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, showing excellent lift and verve to its red fruit and soil flavors. An element of medicinal red cherry and emerging minerality suggest that this silky, deep wine will enjoy a graceful evolution in bottle. I knew that the 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru would be great when I tasted it from barrel last year...but not this great. It has a wonderful, tensile bouquet that just seems to sparkle. The fruit is so crystalline and laden with energy and mineralité that you almost have to sit down! The palate is surfeit with energy, the fruit perhaps a little darker than in barrel with white pepper, spices towards the almost Richebourg-like finish. The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, for this writer, demonstrating a little more precision and mineralité compared to the Les Beaumonts. The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has quite a high-toned bouquet, though it maintains control, with macerated black cherries, bilberry and violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied, quite firm in the mouth, a pleasant saline touch but it feels just a little hemmed in on the finish. Full, deep red. Musky redcurrant, iron and dusty spices on the nose. Suppler and sweeter than the Vosne villages but without quite that wine's cut and precision. The musky red fruit and spice flavors show very good breadth and depth, with the finish revealing serious tongue-dusting tannins. This is a compact, persistent, tightly woven and stimulating Chenin from the Le Mont terroir that reveals firm, tensioned structure and a young finish with potential to improve and refine. The golden-yellow colored 2014 Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive is very clear, precise and elegant on the nose that represents a perfect selection of botrytis, but it's also a fruit-fly vintage that always causes a kind of irritation. Ripe peach and sage aromas intertwined with flinty notes on the intense nose lead to a palate that is rich, sweet and savory as well as elegant and saline, finishing highly stimulating despite the richness. Stony, complex nose features white flowers, mint, quinine, lemon and lime. Rich and dense, with a dusty sense of minerality. As stony as this riesling is, it not at all hard. Finishes very long, with a whiplash of flavor. This comes across as dryer than the Tradition even though it's carrying a few more grams of sugar (10, vs. 7, with the same 13.2% alcohol), due to its stronger mineral character and higher acidity. Now the flagship of this estate, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 75% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre, and a little Syrah. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it offers a beautiful array of black raspberry and darker cherry fruit as well as lots of graphite, chalky minerality, Provençal garrigue, and spice. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied effort has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, rock-solid underlying structure and concentration, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish.
