  • Bruno Clair Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a rich and generous bouquet with blueberry and black cherry aromas, the most extravagant of Bruno Clair’s wines this year. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, very poised and focused with a mineral-driven finish that lingers in the mouth. Lovely strictness on the finish counterbalances the precocity on the nose.

  • Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2016 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a generous and pleasing nose with scents of strawberry preserve, crushed stone, rose petals and subtle orange-blossom. This is refined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins. Beautifully balanced, this has a symmetry that is beguiling and classic. A little austere finish suggests it will benefit from several years in bottle. Utterly beguiling with enormous ageing potential. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

  • Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, populated by ancient vines planted in 1912, suffered a lot of millerandé berries. The bouquet is very well defined with white pepper and tea leaf infusing the mineral-rich black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very harmonious and smooth in texture, perhaps just needing a little more depth and grip to come through on the finish. Wonderful.

  • Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny 2023 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

5 Star Wine. Beautiful colour here, a darker crimson, and the fruit is magical. Perfectly on the red and black cusp while the whole bunches add a floral note. The Clos du Fonteny is on terrific form today with a fine balance of acidity to finish, alongside balanced tannins. A fine long aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

  • Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St-Jacques 2012 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos-St.-Jacques dazzles from start to finish. There is a palpable sense of explosive energy to the dark red and black fruit. Exceptional in its balance and full of nuance, the Clos-St. Jacques delivers a fabulous, Grand Cru-level drinking experience. The huge, resonant finish implores readers to be patient, although that will be very difficult here. This is one of the highlights of the range.
  • Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St-Jacques 2021 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

5 Star Wine. Glowing mid purple. A very gorgeous bouquet, brilliant purity, has been like this all the way through. Not looking for descriptive words here, this is immaculate and has retained delicacy. Very long, very fine with some rose petals at the finish. Delicacy with tensile strength. No sign of a second-class vintage here!
  • Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2023 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (91-94)

(Sweet Spot) (from a .25 ha parcel that is located on the southern side of the vineyard near En Ergot). Here there is sufficient reduction to blur the nuances of what are clearly floral-suffused red berry aromas. There is excellent freshness and verve to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that terminate in a linear, chiseled, austere and very serious finale. This is beautiful but it’s also a ‘buy and forget you own it’ wine.

  • Bruno Clair Marsannay Les Longeroies 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88-91)

(losses to frost were only 30% here, vs. 80% for the Grasses Têtes): Good dark red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry and mocha. At once sweeter and sappier than the Grasses Têtes, offering noteworthy concentration and definition to its juicy dark fruit flavors. Showing much more early personality too. Finishes with serious but pliant tannins.

  • Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin Blanc 2023 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martin is lovely, revealing aromas of crisp Anjou pear, clear honey, wet stones and white flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's dense and concentrated, with a cool core of fruit and a long, saline finish.
  • Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults 2023 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92+)

Notes of sweet stone fruits, waxy citrus and fresh melon preface the 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults Blanc, a medium- to full-bodied, satiny and layered wine that marries rich, almost unctuous fruit with mouthwateringly mordant dry extract to deliver a wine built more like a red than a white.
  • Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martin Carline 2023 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline is the most introverted of Lorenzon's reds this year, unwinding in the glass to offer up notes of dark cherries mingled with spices, licorice and bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, dense and muscular, it's serious and concentrated, with an almost rhodanien personality, concluding with an iris-inflected finish. This will require patience.
  • Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Piece 15 2023 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2023 Mercurey 1er Cru Pièce 15 is an especially extrovert rendition of this cuvée, a bottling produced from 15 small, old-vine parcels growing on calcium-rich soils that Lorenzon considers his finest plots. Bursting with aromas of ripe citrus fruits, flowers, clear honey, buttery pastry and wet stones, it's medium- to full-bodied, rich and ample, with a fleshy, layered core and a long, expansive finish. Of course, it may shut down with some additional time in bottle, but for now, the 2023 is wide open.

From blocks within Lorenzon's holdings with particularly poor soils, the 2023 Montagny 1er Cru Le Choix du Roi offers up notes of lime leaf, lemon oil, white flowers and wet stones, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, suave and polished palate that's long, penetrating and saline. It's both the most mineral and the most elegant of these Montagny bottlings, setting the bar high for the appellation.
  • Bruno Lorenzon Montagny 1er Cru Le Mont Laurent 2022 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2022 Montagny 1er Cru Le Mont Laurent is well worth an effort to seek out if readers can still find it on the market. Wafting from the glass with notes of orange leaf, freshly baked bread and sweet citrus zest, it's medium- to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a beautifully suave, pure profile that showcases the appellation's elegant, ethereal identity.
  • Bruno Lorenzon Montagny 1er Cru Le Mont Laurent 2023 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2023 Montagny 1er Cru Le Mont Laurent derives from east-facing slopes, and it's denser and more structured than the outgoing Truffière, unfurling to reveal notes of crisp stone fruit, honey and jasmine, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate built around bright acids and chalky structure.
  • Bruno Paillard Nec Plus Ultra 2008 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2008 Extra Brut N.P.U. Nec Plus Ultra is a brilliant, taut Champagne. The combination of vintage and the extra brut style favored a Paillard that yields a young Champagne that is quite austere. It will be interesting to see if the 2008 fills out with time in bottle. Today it is piercing in its intensity. Disgorged: April, 2019.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
