Burghound (91-93)
This is also elegant, perfumed and very floral with its pretty blend of red currant, cherry, anise and violet-scented nose. There is lovely tension and minerality suffusing the rich, focused and surprisingly powerful flavors that brim with dry extract on the beautifully long, firm and youthfully austere finish. Black centre, purple rim. 50% whole bunch with two new barrels in seven. The alcohol shows through a bit on the nose. Racked and assembled. Impressive density here, even with some intense red fruit backing the blacker notes. Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2023 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru is completely destemmed this year. It has a fresh and more marine-influenced bouquet to the point where you might misconstrue there being some stems in the mix. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and much more elegant than the 2022. It has fine tannins and nice poise with a harmonious finish. Burghound (89-92)
A brooding and very earthy nose is more deeply pitched and very Gevrey in character. The rich, concentrated and more powerful medium-bodied flavors are firmly structured and serious while exhibiting touch of bitter pit fruit and youthful austerity on the balanced and highly persistent finish. The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges La Charmotte includes 45% whole bunch this year. It has a well-defined bouquet that displays wonderful Pinoté. The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a superb bouquet of brambly red fruit, quite ferrous in style, displaying hints of dried blood and meat juices. Deep purple more than black, the nose is classier and more together than the Clos Vougeot. Actually this is brilliant as soon as the nose starts to open. Wow! This has all the classic depth of Les St-Georges but it seems to have a Vosne side heady joy as well. A huge glorious mouthful, a little white pepper tingle (45% whole bunches), but a royal quality of deep dark raspberry fruit, sensational finish. Easily the best I have ever tasted here. Bright full red. Wild, expressive aromas of raspberry, flinty minerality and pungent spices. Delivers outstanding power and palate-staining richness, with intense, sweet berry and dark cherry fruit complicated by saline, soil-driven minerality. This complex and complete, if youthfully strict, wine is the total package. An attractively layered nose offers up notes of violet, plum, smoked meat hints and plenty of warm earth character to the wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent volume to the ripe, intense and powerful large-scaled flavors that exhibit fine intensity on the powerful, balanced and vibrant finish that delivers its usual fine length. Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has an even heavier reduction than David Croix's "C.C." and this seems more fixed despite transferring between glasses. The palate is better with admirable weight and depth. The reduction is still more pronounced than I would prefer, though it is redeemed by a lovely spiciness on the admittedly oaky finish plus there is plenty of vigour and length. How this Corton-Charlemagne will play out depends on what happens to that reduction... it could go either way, hence the question mark against my score. It has an attractive, though not compelling bouquet with rose petal and incense-tinged red fruit, predominantly raspberry and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with some chewiness on the entry, plenty of extract here, a little powdery in texture with what you might describe as a "gutsy" finish. I have not been looking at a lot of 2015s recently, so it is really interesting in how this has opened up substantially on the nose, with already some secondary characteristics in the bouquet, albeit with a more youthful fruit on the palate. Interestingly this is aromatically quite similar to the nose of the Latricières though there is just a bit more wood in evidence plus a hint of menthol. By contrast there is more size, weight, power and muscle to the big-bodied and equally mineral-driven flavors that also brim with copious amounts of dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the very firm but not hard tannic backbone on the driving, hugely long and youthfully austere finale. This is an exquisitely poised Chambertin that is very much built-to-age and is going to need a minimum of 10 years and once again, is a wine that should last for decades. The wines of Domaine Trapet are the epitome of Burgundian elegance, purity, and finesse. Vinification techniques depend on the vintage but generally consist of a brief period of cold maceration, followed by fermentation in open top wood fermenters with partial inclusion of stems (30 to 50%). Maceration is long and slow, with delicate extraction via punch-down and then gentle pump-overs in the later stages. Sulphur is added only at bottling, in minute doses.
The three magnificent Grand Crus Domaine Trapet owns in Gevrey-Chambertin are in top echelons and again in 2016, Le Chambertin under Jean-Louis’ care, has received outstanding reviews. The Trapet Pere & Fils Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 is awarded a 95-97 pts from Neal Martin (Wine Advocate) and 93-96 pts from Allen Meadows (Burghound).
