The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, which was more or less ready to be bottled, has an attractive bouquet with lemon curd, crushed stone and light praline scents rendering very seductive aromatics. The 30% new oak is very well integrated. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and tension. The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a touch more terroir-expression and mineralité on the nose compared to the Les Chenevottes. The palate is taut and fresh with kernels of orange rind and sour lemon. The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a slightly more penetrating nose than the Vergers, more mineralité coming through with time. The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru was reductive on the nose when I tasted the barrel sample, but that will be addressed by bottling time. There appears to be very good intensity here, and with time, there is an unexpected touch of Shiso leaf. Here too the wood toast is sufficiently present to warrant pointing out on the cool, pretty and airy red berry fruit aromas where background hints of just turned earth and violet add breadth. I very much like the mid-palate texture of the medium-bodied flavors that contrast somewhat with the mildly edgy if still persistent and slightly firmer finish. From En la Poulotte (Couchey) and the better-known Les Longeroies, half and half. Mid ruby colour. The nose offers a very elegant floral pinot, there being a proportion of whole bunches. The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru is 50% whole bunch with no new oak. It has a more powerful bouquet compared to the Clos des Ormes, although it does not exude the same mineralité or finesse. On the other hand, the palate is very well balanced and seems to have more depth and precision than the Clos des Ormes, leading to a compelling mineral-driven, saline finish that lingers for 45+ seconds. The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru, which includes 50% whole bunch, works much better on the nose compared to the Clos des Ormes with detailed raspberry, cranberry and briary scents, the absence of new oak an assiduous decision. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine definition, fine grip with a lively, tensile finish. Picked late in the piece, on 24th September, and vinified with 60% whole bunches, the Petite Charmotte is still in barrel with 30% new. A pretty pink ruby colour, extremely cheerful bouquet, whole bunch on the later picked fruit seems to have worked well. White pepper at the finish. Good medium red. Captivating aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, minerals and flowers have shed the reductive character that made this wine difficult to taste shortly after the bottling. Juicy, penetrating and wonderfully elegant, delivering outstanding flavor intensity without any impression of heaviness. Red berry, red cherry and flowers dominate the middle palate, with an element of saline minerality expanding with air. Really stains the palate and titillates the salivary glands on the very long, rising finish. This wine is so well-balanced that it's delicious right now, but it has the solidity, sappiness and tannic structure for a slow and graceful evolution in the cellar. A transcendent premier cru. The 2018 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, the famous 2.15-hectare monopole of the domaine, is matured in around 25% new oak, although Guillaume d’Angerville mentioned that he intends to use less new oak in the future. It has a very intense bouquet of raspberry preserve, kirsch, blood orange and sous-bois aromas, all displaying wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fabulous density and complexity, offering brambly red fruit, blood orange, orange peel, suggestions of dark chocolate and, of course, wonderful mineral tension on the persistent finish, which fans out beautifully. The 2017 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has perhaps the most "airy" bouquet, it is very transparent at the moment, but the palate is much tighter and backward. There is good backbone here, but it is sulking and it is probably one of the Domaine’s wines that will require the longest bottle age. It has an almost Pommard-like austerity towards the finish.
