The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a limpid deep purple. It has a heavenly bouquet distantly related to the Les Amoureuses, offering precocious but detailed blueberry, black cherry, crushed iris petal and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy, marine-influenced opening, a tang of shucked oyster shells infusing the black and blueberry fruit, leading to a detailed, tensile, lightly spiced finish. (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard). A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. The 2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very intense, cold stone and blackberry scented bouquet, moving towards subtle marine like aromas (oyster shells, Crustacea) with time. There is just wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, firm backbone, a slightly more masculine Musigny with just a hint of savoriness towards the long finish. This is showing great personality even at this early juncture, although of course, it will not even consider reaching its drinking plateau without 8-10 years in bottle. Their biggest holding. Oldest vines planted in 1953 and still in good shape. And all more than 25 years old. Deep crimson. The sort of freshness that I associate with stems even though this is fully destemmed. Cedary, cool, dark fruit, intense and just a touch dusty/stony/mineral. The 2019 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a wondrous nose, with crushed strawberry, raspberry compote and light vanilla scents. The oak here is supremely well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied and mineral-driven, with fine tannins, great precision and a vivid, animated finish that fans out gloriously. Skillful winemaking is evident here. (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it’s less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Outstanding. Here there is no reductive funk as the agreeably fresh nose offers up ripe notes of earthy and spicy purple fruit. There is both fine punch and volume to the utterly delicious and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that display traces of warmth and rusticity on the otherwise solidly persistent and complex finish. The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village comes from four sectors, 50% in the south and 50% in the north of the appellation, and was completely de-stemmed. This shows just a bit of reduction on the nose, although that will be resolved by bottling time. The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which contains 40% whole bunch, takes a few swirls of the glass to meld together, finally delivering airy blackberry and bilberry scents, perhaps more Morey in style than the titular village. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a granular texture and a salty, slightly brusque but fresh finish. Fine, but it will need some bottle age to smooth its edges. A second cuvée without the stems is perhaps just a little less interesting on the nose. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. It has a clean, precise tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, raspberry preserve, pressed iris and subtle undergrowth, almost peaty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite masculine compared to the Clos de la Roche, and shows firmer grip and persistence on the chalky finish. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, veins of blood orange and a pinch of sea salt. Lovely structure and focus on the finish.
