The 2019 Marsannay Les Longeroies comes from the middle of the vineyard on clayey soils. It is quite high-toned on the nose with Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and sea cave aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very good depth, rather spicy with a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper on the vivacious finish. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is dense and forward on the nose, slightly more concentration and just a little more confit in style. The new oak becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is sweet and slightly candied on the opening with blood orange infused black fruit, grippy and quite bold. Not a subtle Clos Saint-Jacque, but it retains delineation throughout, finishing with cracked black pepper and mineral notes. This will need several years in bottle. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, aged in around 50% new oak, was again, too reduced to read on the nose at this stage. Burghound (89-92)
(from Les Duresses and Grands Champs). Slightly more elegant aromas include those of poached plum, cassis and newly turned earth. The seductive yet dense and powerful bigger-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the solidly persistent finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in around 25% new oak, has quite a perfumed bouquet with red cherries and rose petal scents, quite airy and nicely focused. The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a primal bouquet of black cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, becoming more confit-like with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and fine depth and poise. Crisp and taut with a pleasant brittle texture toward the finish. It needs time, but it will come good in the end. Rich, exuberant purple. A cheerful nose, flamboyantly perfumed which is as Charmes should be. I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty. The 2020 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a very well-delineated bouquet, very terroir-driven, crushed stone infusing the red fruit a touch of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, taut and crisp, gently building towards quite a complex finish with touches of Early Grey infusing the red fruit, cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru is attractive and fresh on the nose, melted tar and pencil box scents percolating through the red and black fruit, a hint of orange rind with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, finely tuned with such pretty red cherry and wild strawberry notes on the tart finish. Like the domaine's La Combe d'Orveau, this Premier Cru sits high on a slope above Grand Crus. The vines averaged 44 years old for the 2020 vintage, with the larger part planted in 1974 and the smaller bit planted in 1986. The focused, pure nose smells of blackberry coulis and fresh flowers. The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. The 2020 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a vivacious nose - according to Romain Taupenot it was much more closed the previous week. Hints of brown spice infused the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with veins of orange zest and white pepper on the finish. The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is expressive on the nose with dark berry fruit, sous-bois, just a touch of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, ripe red cherry mixed with allspice and white pepper, segueing into a quite a concentrated finish with a long spicy after that might deceive you into think there are stems here. The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a temptress of a nose, with open, welcoming red cherry, crushed strawberry and subtle mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. There is plenty of tightly knitted fruit here, and a patina of oak that is still to be assimilated, but also wonderful detail and subtlety on the sublime, sophisticated finish. The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru evinces a more modern style on the nose with pure and opulent black cherries, fig and sloes. It comes across as a bit of a crowd pleaser but it is undeniably attractive. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin and well judged acidity. There is plenty of extraction here and a carapace of quality new oak, but it seems to work well. It should become a noble Nuits Saint-Georges with a few years in bottle.
