This deeply satisfying Bourgogne boasts a deep ruby colour and forward aromas of ripe cherry and wild strawberry. The structure is supple, with firmish tannins, good freshness and concentration on the palate that suggest this could also age. The vines are all in the Gevrey village limits, east of the Route Nationale. The domaine owns 5ha here that were purchased in the 1960s; some of the vines were planted then. The complex blend of exotic Asian spice, forward pomegranate fruit, and savoury, earthy notes make the Chambolle Sentiers an intriguing wine. Some oak is still showing through, but this will integrate with time. There is more density and extract than one might think for a Chambolle at this level, which draws this out to a forceful and long conclusion—charming wine. The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 15% new oak, showed just a tiny morsel of reduction on the nose, that the concentration here was still tangible. The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. The 2023 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru seems more detailed and articulates its terroir with more aplomb than the Clos de la Roche at the moment. There is brightness and energy, combined with complexity. After a few swirls, touches of bay leaf and tea leaves emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit and fine grip, slightly more viscous in texture than the Clos de la Roche, with a pinch of black pepper and graphite on the long finish. Bright medium red. Very pure but very reticent nose hints at blueberry, raspberry, licorice, game and woodsmoke. Delivers a compelling combination of fine-grained texture, deep sweetness and restrained power; still youthfully compressed but already boasts thrilling mouthfilling perfume of tart red fruits, spices and saline minerality. This spectacular Chambertin broadens out on the back half without giving any impression of weight. A wine of uncommon depth and class, with no sign of overripeness. Maybe just a little more confit in style than others. Still, a fabulous Chambertin that gains clarity and precision in the glass. Effortless. Here too there is just enough wood in evidence to mention on the gorgeously spiced and intricately layered aromas of essence of red currant, floral, plum, earth and a whisper of the sauvage. Once again the mouthfeel of the notably more imposingly-scaled flavors is sleek with excellent minerality that really comes up on the super-saline finish that goes on and on. But what I really admire about the '16 Bèze is the texture because it's at once muscular yet highly seductive and refined. The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is blessed with a bouquet of real pedigree: very complex mixture of red and black brambly fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petal aromas. The harmony and delineation is outstanding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, pliant tannins that lend this Clos Saint-Jacques symmetry and poise.
