Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Michel Laroche Chablis Vaillons Vv 2022 exemplifies the quintessential elegance of the Chablis region. Crafted in the esteemed Vaillons appellation, this Chardonnay benefits from Michel Laroche’s meticulous vineyard management, ensuring optimal expression of the terroir. The vineyards, situated on Kimmeridgian limestone soils, provide a distinctive flinty minerality characteristic of fine Chablis. Hand-harvested grapes undergo gentle pressing and are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve their vibrant acidity and fresh fruit flavours. The wine is then matured on lees for several months, enhancing its complexity and texture without the influence of oak. Michel Laroche, renowned for his commitment to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques, delivers a wine of remarkable balance and finesse. The Chablis Vaillons Vv 2022 presents an enticing bouquet of citrus and green apple, underpinned by subtle mineral notes, making it an exceptional choice for connoisseurs seeking authentic Burgundy quality. |

Vinous (93)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru is actually more backward on the nose compared to the Village Cru, tightly coiled with mineral-driven, malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated oak on the entry. Fresh and saline, there’s ample grip toward the finish, with just a touch of grilled walnut and fine length. Excellent. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91)Fresh clear pale colour. The nose has less character than my favourites in the line-up. Takes a little time, then more emerges. There is something of a steely backbone, this is nicely made but I pine for pinot in this vineyard. Well balanced. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)A glowing pale lemon yellow. There is a clear white fruit charm to this, a little more chiselled than the softly welcoming Chenevottes, with a limestone length and purity at the finish. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)An attractive mid lemon colour. The nose is a little more backward, but the palate delivers impressive tension along with the usual complete mouthful of the purest white fruit. Tension pursues all the way through and the ripeness is perfect. This is not the most fruit forward of Chaumées I have tasted here, but has all the qualities for ageing well. Drink from 2028-2034. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale colour with a lime time. A fresh raw fruit energy to the nose. The white fruit expands vividly across the palate, the same light toast from the oak, but nicely integrated, this is a Chassagne with considerable charm that can be drunk early, but has a fine thread of minerality through to the back. Drink from 2026-2031. |

Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023. |

Decanter (98)A wine of intense concentration, tension and focus, even in the warm conditions of 2022. Aroma notes of ripe apple, peach and quince, then the volume and density you'd expect from 2022, but it's well balanced by the fresh acidity that draws it to a lingering finish. Grapes from Niellon’s plot of old vines are fermented on native yeasts in 40% new cask. This wine is among the best from this vintage and will make old bones if you are so inclined. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)Another rich dark colour. Half new wood, but it seems to dominate much less here than it did in the Boudots. There is plenty of substance but the desirable Echezeaux nuances are there too. Give this time to refine and I think it will make an excellent Echezeaux. Drink from 2032-2039. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)A rich deep purple. At the moment, I am finding that the oak is playing too strong a hand, rather dumbing down the fruit which is certainly there. 45% new wood is not in itself excessive, but it makes the fruit darker and heavier. There is plenty of fruit weight here so this may be a severe rating. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: December 2023. |
