Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

(5 Star Wine) This has not fallen clear after a recent lees stirring. Jadot stir their Grands Crus twice after the fermentations, once each in summer and autumn. There is significant weight as you would expect, almost a monolithic block, a little citrus, both lemon and lime. Impeccable length. This requires significantly more ageing but should join its fellows on the podium. Drink from 2034-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year.

Decanter (93)

Domaine Long-Depaquit is the Chablis arm of the Bichot family. Vaucoupin is one of their signatures and in 2022 it shows a great combination of sun-ripened peach fruit on the palate, balanced by zesty acidity and a hint of white pepper. Lovely purity here. Manages to be both powerful and elegant at the same time. Already drinking nicely, this has the concentration to age very well.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

A bright fresh mid purple. The bouquet is superb, in a really lush and almost creamy red berry fruit, not as wild as some until a little savoury touch at the finish. Complex, a fine weave to the texture, with pure red berry fruit coming out at the finish. Despite its location I tend to think of Bonnes Mares as a Morey style Grand Cru, but you can certainly see the touch of Chambolle in this. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, one of the last to be picked over three different passes, has a plush and expressive bouquet with dark cherries, raspberry coulis and light violet petal aromas that recede and reveal orange rind and yuzu scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip on the entry. It’s a solid Charmes-Chambertin that is Mazoyères in style because, well, that's where it's from! A serious Charmes-Chambertin that will age well in bottle.

Burghound (91-94)

A discreet application of wood sets off the softly spicy and earthy aromas of violet, lavender plum and red currant. The powerful and markedly more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors exude a subtle minerality on the succulent yet very firmly structured finale that exhibits excellent length. Patience will be necessary but it should be well-rewarded in time as this is packed with development potential.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru has a classic Morey-Saint-Denis bouquet with mineral-driven black fruit and touches of melted tar and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-balanced and grippy, with perhaps the most saline finish amongst Arlaud's Morey Premier Crus. This will need more time than the Aux Chesaux, but it will be worth the wait.

A pretty mid ruby colour. Fresh raspberry, very sensual up front, firmer tannins behind, but the fruit covers them nicely. Linear in style, good acidity, and with a more complex crunch to the fruit at the back. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023.

5 Star Wine. Mid lemon yellow. Here too the apples are on show on the nose, but fascinatingly complex, plenty of yellow fruit and ripe citrus, but with the detailed distinction of this cru. A really fine long finish, with enough acidity, more generous than some but totally in balance. Drink from 2029-2037.

The Bernard Bonin Meursault La Rencontre 2022 is produced by winemaker Bernard Bonin in the picturesque region of Meursault, Burgundy, France. The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru shows some reduction on the nose, but there is more fruit intensity here compared to the Les Damodes, slightly darker and well-delineated. The palate is just beautiful: filigree tannins once again, fresh and vibrant, satin-like texture that belies the structure and grip. Superb sapidity here. It has a very sustained, peppery aftertaste. Outstanding.

5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. A glowing lemon and lime colour, really delicious. Immaculate precision on the nose, as steely as they come. Excellent tension, the purest of white fruits, just a little cream behind which is a sign of concentration, supported in this case by really well-judged oak. Huge ageing potential. Youthful bitters in the best way. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted Jun 2024.

A blend of Damodes du bas and Basses Maizières, picked on 3rd and 7th September. Attractive mid purple. Some nobility to the nose but in a discreet way. This is happily balanced with excellent class, heady Vosne fruit, even some spice, then a firmer tannin, but this works really well. Damodes gives the lift, Maizières the body. Drink from 2028-2035. (5 Star Wine) First we tasted the component parts. (1) Young vines from 1980s. A deep concentrated purple. Lesser foliage in the hot dry summer has concentrated the colour and other aspects, giving a dark style of fruit as well, with a nutty finish, but good acidity. (2) A blend, mainly from plot #3 and a bit of #1. Mid purple in colour, less demonstrative on the nose. A much suppler style of fruit, less forceful acidity, fine length, more typical Epenots here. (3) Old vines, 90+ years old: A deep glowing purple. A little more intensity, a gorgeous quality of deep red fruit, just a touch tougher in its tannins, plus the acidity. (4) Press wine: dark purple, powerful rather than fine on the nose, more volatile, but could be useful in the blend. Sweet thick dark red to black fruit. Chunky stuff. And now the blend: A deep purple colour with only a very slightly lighter rim. The bouquet suggests poise as the fruit has melded together harmoniously. On the palate this is, as almost always, a much more complete wine than the individual parts. The wine seems to push down deeper while retaining all the class of the very best components. We are approaching the cusp of red and black fruit, the acidity is perfectly harnessed and the tannins are fine grained. Potentially a very fine Clos des Epeneaux. Drink from 2032-2040+. Six barrels, two of them new. A medium to bright purple. The nose is invigorating with as little as 10% whole bunches, enough to add a floral note. This is lively on the palate, a Fremiets which has remembered it is in Volnay, not Pommard, delightfully stylish at the finish. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted: October 2023.

Mid crimson to purple, with some reduction on the nose. A concentrated dark raspberry fruit, still with this reductive element. If and when that clears there is a fine long finish to look forward to instead. Impressive fruit in the end, so scored on the asu,mption that the reduction will clear. Drink from 2028-2034. In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: November 2023.

Decanter (98)

A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening.

Just as deep a purple colour but more elegance on the nose, less obviously and immediately sumptuous. Wavelets of alpine strawberry and its raspberry equivalent dance across the palate, super fine, with startling elegance. Another 2022 beauty from Thomas. Drink from 2030-2038.

5 Star Wine. Fresh bright purple. What a radiant nose, all the heady joy of Vosne, such stylish bright ripe cherry fruit with some mixed red berries behind. Seamless texture and very long. Sheer class. Drink from 2028-2035.

Wine Advocate (90-92)

Derived almost exclusively from lieu-dit Les Draze, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, cherries, rose petals and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and pure, with a concentrated core of fruit framed by sweet tannins, it's showing especially well.

Glowing purple. There is a fine weight of fruit, building steadily, lifting deep cherry notes, with an excellent texture, serge not silk, but it provides a fine backbone. I can see this ageing into a classic Dujac village Morey, always one of Burgundy’s great village wines. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.

James Suckling (97-98)

Mind-blowingly deep and subtle nose of stone fruit with citrusy nuances. All the density of Batard, but with such elegance at the extremely long, focused finish. Great potential! From old vines purchased in 2008.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru is aged in 50% new oak and completely de-stemmed. This is pleasingly floral on the nose, with wilted roses filtering through the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is very elegant in style, with a composed and transparent finish. What a lovely Les Damodes from Faiveley.

Burghound (93)

(from the climats of Les Treux and Clos St. Denis). This is also trimmed in enough wood to notice on the beautifully layered nose of both red and dark currant, exotic tea, spice and floral wisps. The exceptionally rich and nicely textured medium weight plus flavors are shaped by dense but fine tannins on the mouthcoating and lingering finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This too offers excellent development potential and it’s just as well because it definitely needs to add depth with time in bottle.

Burghound (91)

(from vines planted between 1937 and 1942). This is also attractively floral in character with its nose of red and dark currant and more obvious earth influence that is also trimmed in moderate wood. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the fleshy yet nicely detailed medium-bodied flavors that flash evident minerality on the dusty and youthfully austere finale where the supporting tannic spine is even finer. This is quite good with fine development potential yet it should also drink reasonably well young.
