Approaching perfection, this wine is inky, bluish/purple-colored to the rim, offering up notes of incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. A touch of roasted espresso bean is also present. The wine has great concentration, a magnificent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. This beauty seems to be in mid-adolescence with at least 25-30 years of life ahead.

The 2000 Chambertin Grand Cru is youthful in appearance with just very slight bricking. The bouquet is well-defined with quite precocious red fruit laced with orange blossom and crushed stone, yet it does not possess the complexity of the preceding vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, perfectly judged acidity, velvety, so much so that this is the one vintage that is quite Vosne-like in style. Coheres beautifully on the finish. No, not a top-ranking Chambertin from Rousseau, but so delicious. Tasted at the Rousseau Chambertin vertical at La Vienne.

Rousseau's 2000 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is quite successful in this vintage, and it's certainly still full of life, opening in the glass with a pretty bouquet of red cherry, strawberry, subtle mint, mustard seed and potpourri. On the palate, the wine is supple, polished and velvety, with decent concentration and depth, and suggestions of baked fruit on the palate. The Clos de la Roche is never Rousseau's most compelling grand cru, but it would be churlish to deny that this is excellent.

Strawberry, dark cherry, lengthy finish and relatively firm tannin. Balanced and elegant but incredibly reticent on the nose and that leaves it too evasive for my preferences.

Ruby-red. Slightly reduced aromas of cassis, violet, bitter chocolate, espresso, and nutty, spicy oak. Very closed in on itself today, giving a stronger impression of acidity than the Suchots. Subtle hints of minerals and spices. Quite backward for the vintage, with a firm tannic spine.

Light gold with a steady bead of pinpoint bubbles. Deep, musky aromas of buttered toast, cherry pit, blood orange, lemon rind, pungent herbs and yellow rose, with mounting spiciness. Deeply concentrated but showing unlikely finesse, with firm, gripping red berry and citrus flavors and exotic notes of candied flowers and smoky lees. Intriguing for its blend of richness and delicacy; the endless finish repeats the spice and floral notes and lingers with impressive clarity and notes of honey, anise and minerals.

I have had mixed experiences with Bruno Giacosa’s 2000 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto, but this bottle, from a case I purchased on release, is absolutely stellar. Intensely sweet, floral aromas soar from the glass. Radiant, open-knit and super-expressive, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the vintage. It has been a few years since I last tasted the 2000. In that time, the wine appears to have barely budged at all, which will come as welcome news to readers who own it. The 2000 Riserva doesn’t quite reach the heights of the truly epic Giacosa wines of the era, but it comes close, especially on this night. I can only hope that future bottles show this well.

Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just sings Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Ségur; it might just outclass the 2005. Tasted March 2015.

Subtle, steely aromas of peach, soft citrus fruits, nut butter and charred oak. Sweet, peachy and intensely flavored, with strong acidity and minerality giving the wine a penetrating quality and superb nervosite Very Puligny in style, finishing with excellent grip. This has turned out impressively.

A tiny production St.-Emilion, the 2000 Croix de Labrie offers a big, thick mouthful of wine, loads of flavor, and a distinctive, modern style emphasizing melted chocolate, graphite, coffee bean, creme de cassis, and jammy black currants. While not terribly subtle, it is loaded with flavor. Enjoy this juicy, fully mature effort over the next 5-7 years.

The most concentrated and serious of these village wines to this point, with a strong mineral character contributing to the wine chewy firmness. Dusty tannins coat the palate. The 2000 Brut Millesime Amour de Deutz is a rare Blanc de Blancs made from vineyards in Mesnil (60%), Avize (35%) and Villers Marmery (5%) that the estate uses exclusively for charity events and/or gifts, which is a shame since that means only a few people will ever have an opportunity to taste it. The Amour de Deutz bursts from the glass with endless layers of mineral-infused fruit, showing marvelous intensity and richness. Pears, apples and flowers linger on the finish. Disgorged 12/10/2009. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

The Echézeaux 2000 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti won the hearts of everyone around the table–one of those wines that you just cannot help falling for. It has a dark garnet core with thin bricking on the rim. The nose is actually reminiscent of a fine Musigny from de Vogüé, a little introverted at first but it's just kidding with you and bursts open with infectious joie de vivre. The palate is medium-bodied, quite linear at first with superb tension and energy. No, it is not as complex as the Grands Echézeaux 2000 but that Loire-like, sappy finish is beguiling. Drink now and enjoy over the next 15 years. Given the growing season this performs way above expectations.

I find this a bit vague for Richebourg today, but certainly a lovely pinot in the making.

A forward, sexy-style Cote Rotie that shows more oomph than most in the vintage, Jamet's 2000 Cote Rotie offers the hallmark complexity of the estate with its perfumed raspberry, game, flowers, olives and peppery bouquet. This carries to a full-bodied, voluptuously textured, seamless wine that has excellent purity, low acidity and tons of charm. Probably closest in style to the 1990, drink this character-filled beauty over the coming 5-7 years.

The 2000 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru from Leroy offers crisp red fruit, bay leaf and clove on a rip-roaring nose that pays little heed to the reputation of this “tricky” Burgundy vintage. It just harnesses the horsepower that this Premier Cru can gift a wine and runs with it. The palate is more measured: very well balanced and quite succulent in style, with wonderful definition and a fresh, slightly brine-tinged finish that has an unerring crystalline quality to it. Quite brilliant considering the vintage. Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.

Good deep red. Redcurrant, mocha, minerals and cinnamon on the nose; smells more important than the Clos Saint-Denis. A step up in concentration and power, with considerably more stuffing than the last wine. Finishes persistent and ripe.

The Fonsalette Cotes Du Rhone Syrah 2000 is a true embodiment of the prestigious Rhone Valley. Produced by the esteemed Château Rayas, it reflects the nuanced craftsmanship that has spanned generations. The Syrah grapes are painstakingly hand-harvested from vines planted in the iron-rich, stony soils of the Fonsalette estate. Here, a combination of Mediterranean climate and altitude blesses the grapes with optimal ripening conditions.

After harvest, the Syrah grapes undergo meticulous vinification. Traditional fermentation in concrete vats is employed, preserving the grape's natural qualities. The wine is then matured in foudres (large wooden casks) for nearly two years, imbuing it with a pronounced expression of terroir and complexity.

The Fonsalette Cotes Du Rhone Syrah 2000 unveils an elegant palate, marked by black fruit, spices, and leathery undertones, promising an unforgettable tasting experience. As efforts in the vineyard and cellar converge, this wine is a testament to Rhone Valley's rich winemaking tradition.
