Vinous (92)The 1998 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru performs commendably given that I am not particularly fond of this growing season. The vibrant nose features black currant pastilles and a subtle marine influence; traits of kelp and iodine emerge with time. Very charming, and the whole-bunch addition is extremely well subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and fleshy, offering a caressing mouthfeel that you might mistake for a 1999. Granted, this 1998 is not as complex or as thrilling as the follow-up, yet it is nicely proportioned, with a discreet bitter edge on the sapid, conservative finish. Bottles can be consumed now but should give another 15 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Clos Saint-Denis vertical at Hide restaurant. 92 |

Vinous (91-94)(half of these vines are 70 years old, the other half 60): Moderately saturated medium red. Musky, soil-driven scents of fresh red fruits, crushed rock, flint and rose petal. Penetrating and sharply delineated, offering terrific intensity to its flavors of red berries, sappy cherry, minerals and blood orange. At once salty and juicy, this very long wine leaves the palate perfumed. Stehly compares this wine to a Musigny in its youthful strictness, and it strikes me as a classic young Clos Saint-Denis that will need time in bottle to expand. Stehly used to work mostly with spicy Cadus barrels for this wine but now uses one-third each Berthomieu and Tonnelerie du Val du Loire for his Clos Saint-Denis, as he feels these barrels are at once sweeter and more delicate. |

The Georges Lignier Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 is a resplendent jewel of the Burgundy wine region, crafted with dedication by 4th generation winemaker, Benjamin Lignier. This French red has been lavished with meticulous care in every phase, from judicious pruning in the vineyards to the detailed sorting of hand-harvested grapes. A literal fusion of modernity and tradition, its exquisite quality reflects the Lignier family's strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal use of sulphites. Nestled in the prestigious Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru vineyard, the Pinot Noir grapes realise their full potential giving the wine an unparalleled depth and character. The wine enchants the palate with robust red fruit flavours, harmonised by elegant earthy undertones and a tantalisingly lingering finish. Its exceptional structure promises impressive cellaring potential. The Georges Lignier Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 draws the fine line between power and finesse, summing up the beauty of Burgundy in one bottle. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Four barrels made from 103 year-old vines. The yield in 2008 was just 12 hl/ha (‘We lose money on it’, according to Laurent Ponsot). Very opulent with a hauntingly layered nose. Almost more reminiscent of a cherry liqueur than a wine. Great energy – rather like a healthy drink for its real spine of life. Subtle, sweet, wild and long but with excellent freshness. ‘Probably the sort of wine that was drunk 200 years ago,’ Ponsot claims. |
