The Rathfinny vineyard is in Cradle Valley on the South Downs of Sussex. South facing, three miles from the sea, light thin clay loam over chalk. The winery runs on solar energy and deploys waste-water recycling. They've planted indigenous hedging and trees for windbreaks and biodiversity, and are working with Natural England, the National Trust and South Downs National Park to improve local habitat, regenerated the natural chalk grass downland and create wildlife corridors. Liquorice nose. It's hard to believe the dosage is so low, because the ripeness and roundness of fruit on this wine is exceptional. Pin-point-fine bubbles snap the lemon and blueberry fruit into taut lines. There's a cool stoniness, like mossy concrete; an almost imperceptible peppery nuttiness; and then the wine momentarily widens into sweet pear before narrowing into a piercing finish. |

Fermented and aged in a combination of large barrels and stainless steel. The initial release of this wine was disgorged in early January 2024. Dosage 6 g/l. 7,500 bottles produced.The smoky, marine-scented aromas, like rain on windswept coastal cliffs, have goosebumps tingling down my neck before I've even sipped the wine. So racy it takes your breath away. White-knuckle tension, white-shell minerality, white stone fruit and long, long, sweet pithy tannins. Power in structure: salt-crusted verticality, a whisper of honey across the endless breadth. It feels like licking chiselled marble. Stern, high-cheek-bone beauty. There is so much tension in the wine that it feels like it might snap in your mouth; it feels like the crack of a whip splitting a white winter sky. I'd strongly urge laying this down for as long as you dare. If you drink it now, don't chill it as much as you might champagne and, if you can, allow it to open in the glass. I've been tasting a very large number of top-notch grower champagnes recently and by comparison the Sugrue wines, every bit as good, are underpriced (for which read VGV). |

It was picked from October 22 to November 3 after a warm, dry October, the yield 15hl/ha, 50% fermented in stainless steel and 50% in old Burgundy barrels and aged on the lees for nine months. Dosage is 8g/L. This has a fantastic bouquet of bewitching scents of lime, green apple, honeysuckle and slithers of tinned peach, all beautifully defined. The palate does not disappoint, delivering exquisite balance, wonderful focus and a touch of mineralité toward the harmonious finish. Now this is how you make a great Blanc de Blancs. |
