Decanter (95)An utterly delicious Cinsault from Swartland pioneer and champion of the Cinsault revival in South Africa, Andre Adrian (Adi) Badenhorst. The Ramnasgras comes from a small vineyard on the estate, planted in the mid 50’s, and is the product of meticulous hand selection, fermentation in ‘dodgy old wooden vats’ and maturation in ‘less dodgy foudre for 12 months’. Such is Adi’s way, the wine is made with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and is a true reflection of the vintage conditions and Swartland terroir. This is full of red berries and perfumed floral notes with a mineral edge. A small production of 3,500 bottles, so worth seeking out and stocking-up if you can. |

It has a very seductive bouquet of honeysuckle, passion fruit and hints of beeswax that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a saline opening, plus a fine bead of acidity. There is a light saline lick toward the finish that becomes nuttier with aeration, although this does not quite deliver the complexity of Alheit’s best Chenin Blancs. Still, it is a lovely white blend that should age with style. |

A seductively perfumed vintage, the aromatics show alluring notes of violets, potpourri and hits of lily over dark bramble berry fruits with hints of mocha espresso notes that combine with subtle buttered brown toast nuances. The palate shows fabulous elegance and finesse with a soft touch concentration of black currant, Christmas pudding, savoury plum compote and black cherry. James Suckling (98)I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years. |

A hint of black truffle and tapenade, too. Full body with fine, silky tannins that highlight the juicy aspect of this wine. Dusty tannins gradually build up on the palate in a crescendo, following through to a juicy, precise and lengthy finish. Super-polished and refined. There is still cabernet verticality on the palate. The finest Ao Yun so far? It has a finish that lasts almost two minutes. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 17% cabernet franc, 10% syrah and 6% petit verdot. This is a blend of 23% of Xidang village, 21% Sinong, 32% Shuori and 24% Adong. Already drinkable now, but should hold until 2026. |

This 1997-vintage Ardmore has been matured in a single refill hogshead for 21 years, before being bottled in February 2019 for Gordon & MacPhail’s Connoisseurs Choice series. Soft, smoky aromas of camphor mingle with brown sugar and honey-roasted peanuts, while the palate initially offers sweet apricot jam and lemon zest notes. Situated in breathtaking scenery in the hills above Cromdale, the Balmenach distillery has been described by Jim Murray (Whisky Bible) as "almost the archetypal Speysider", but not necessarily in the way one may expect of the region famed for perfumed, delicate malts. Founded in 1824 it is known for its ultra-traditional style, condensing their spirit in old-school worm tubs rather than modern shell and tube condensers. The result is a hefty, meaty single malt that has long been jealously sought out by blenders to prop up lighter malts and grains and only very rarely does it get the chance to shine as a single malt. That is starting to change, though and a number of independent bottlers have seen plenty of success with older-age Balmenach and just last year we had excellent demand for Hunter Laing's magnificent Old & Rare 1989 expression, which flew out at over £300 per bottle! Tasting Note Approaching the magical age of 10 years old, this is a phenomenal cask of a classic, yet unique Speysider. It's profile is a relic of a bygone age courtesy of the ultra-traditional production methods. A rich, oily texture, firm, meaty mouthfeel and pungent profile of spicey bourbon and rye characteristics make for a dynamic whisky that has the stuffing, and remarkably high ABV to mature for many years to come as it takes on more mellow, deeply pitched aromatics. This is a strong candidate for finishing in a very active cask as the spirit's body will easily stand up to Oloroso wood or even PX. |
